Another district game and another extra-inning affair for the Boerne Champion softball team.
The Lady Chargers played Veterans Memorial last Friday and that contest went nine innings before the Lady Patriots won it 7-4. Before that, Champion won in eight innings over Wagner.
They are 7-8 overall and 1-1 in district. The Lady Chargers continue district play this week and visited New Braunfels Canyon Tuesday and travel to Kerrville Tivy on Thursday.
Both offenses came alive late in last Friday’s game. It was 1-0 in favor of Champion in the second and that score held until the sixth when Veterans Memorial tallied 2 runs to take the 2-1 lead.
The Chargers tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-2 and it stayed that way until the eighth frame. The Lady Patriots knocked in a run on a homer to pull ahead at 3-2, but Champion tied it in the bottom half of the frame and it was 3-3 and headed to the ninth.
In that ninth inning, Veterans Memorial had a big inning with 4 runs for the 7-3 advantage.
The Lady Chargers tried to rally but only scratched for one run in the bottom of the ninth and fell to the Patriots team that won the game despite committing 7 errors.
Champion finished with 8 hits in the game, including 3 singles from Marlena Spurrier who had two clutch hits to bring in runs in two different innings to pick up 2 RBI.
Emily Young knocked out 2 hits, Riley Murrish singled, Alison Kory tripled and scored, Lilly Ritchie plated a run, Abby Brehmer singled and scored and Jaycee Bendele scored a run.
Ava Trevino went 5 innings in the circle for the Chargers and gave up 7 hits, 2 runs, no walks and struck out 5. Mylie Parker also fanned 5 batters, yielded 1 walk, 6 hits and 3 earned runs.
