After a road victory Thursday at Pieper, the Lady Chargers basketball team needed just one more win or a Kerrville Tivy loss on Friday to secure the No. 2 seed in district.

It turns out, Champion didn’t need any help from the Lady Antlers after they took care of business Friday at home vs. Smithson Valley on Senior Night.

Champion had one more game left Tuesday at Seguin and will enter next week’s playoffs as the second seed in 26-5A. The Lady Chargers are 27-6 overall and 11-2 in district.

Vs. Smithson Valley

The Chargers and Rangers game became heated at times and one Smithson Valley fan was tossed from the gym, but Champion kept its cool and won, 46-35.

Friday’s contest was tied at 10-10 after one and then the Chargers doubled up the Rangers in the second, 12-6, for the 22-16 halftime lead.

Champion added to its lead in the third after they claimed the quarter 11-9 and took a 33-25 edge into the final period as the crowd started getting into it.

The Chargers added to its lead and went up 42-30 after a pair of 3s from Bralyn Gault and Grace Erbstoesser but Smithson Valley tried to rally and scored the next five and it was a 7-point game at 42-35 with 3:50 remaining on the clock.

That’s where the rally ended as Smithson Valley missed the rest of the way and didn’t score another point, while Champion added two more insurance baskets for the final 4 points of the game.

Adriana Barreiro finished with 6 points, all in the third, Hudson Lonsdale drained a couple of 3s for 6 points, Madyson Marquard tallied 9, Addison Hankins battled foul trouble but still scored 6,Alivia Gonzales hit a 2, Gault scored 4 and Erbstoesser paced the team with 13 points.

Vs. Pieper

Champion defeated Pieper 65-37 on Thursday and since the JV game was cancelled, head coach Jason Sanders brought up a few JV players and suited up 15 for the game with 10 of them scoring.

The Chargers were up 33-20 at halftime and won the second half, 32-17, and were in double digits all four quarters.

Madyson Marquard paced Champion with 18 points, Adriana Barreiro tallied 13, Hudson Lonsdale scored 9, Addison Hankins and Grace Erbstoesser netted 6 points apiece, Bralyn Gault added 5, Alivia Gonzales finished with 3, Taylor Burk and Christine McGinn both chipped in with 2 and Kayla Ramirez hit a free throw.
