Because of the bad weather that hit the Hill Country early last week, the Boerne Champion girls soccer team had to play two matches about 16 hours apart and it was mixed results for the Lady Chargers after they won one and lost the other.

Champion hosted New Braunfels Canyon on Friday night and was kept off the board in a 2-0 setback. They were back at it Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Veterans Memorial and picked up a 4-1 win.

The Veterans Memorial game was moved from last Tuesday to Saturday instead of Thursday like most other make-up matches were. Chargers coach Kara Walters said the Patriots field is grass and wasn’t dry enough by Thursday, so they played it Saturday.

Champion is 4-6 overall and 2-1 in district. They hosted Kerrville Tivy Tuesday and visit Pieper on Friday.

Vs. Veterans Memorial The Lady Chargers bounced back from Friday’s loss to pound the Patriots, 4-1, behind 25 shots, including 15 shots on goal. They also had 5 corner kicks in the match.

All the goals for both teams occurred in the second half after it was 0-0 at halftime.

Veterans actually took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but Champion fired back with 4 consecutive goals.

Regan Alt tallied 2 of the Chargers goals, while Emma Mae Dixon and Reagan Burkey each knocked in one goal apiece. Alt had Champion’s first and last goals, the final one coming with just 27 seconds left in the match.

Maddie Micale was in goal and came up with 4 saves.

Vs. NB Canyon

Canyon had a good defense and didn’t allow a goal in Friday’s match. They were fast and athletic and didn’t give the Chargers much time on each possession.

Champion did manage to get off 10 shots, with 6 on goal but didn’t convert any of its opportunities.

The Cougarettes scored its first goal 14 minutes into the match and then made it 2-0 early in the second half.

Chargers keeper Lola Vaughan did have 8 saves in the match.
