Lady Hounds soccer squad has unfinished business in 2022

During last year’s soccer season, the Boerne High boys and girls teams were both hoping to make it to the 4A state tournament.

During last year’s soccer season, the Boerne High boys and girls teams were both hoping to make it to the 4A state tournament.

Well, the BHS boys qualified and went on to win the 4A title, but the Lady Greyhounds came up just short.

The Boerne girls were close and made it to the fourth round or regional semifinals before they were eliminated by Calallen, 1-0, in a match that went to overtime in Floresville.

Boerne girls coach Jeremy Shannon said that loss to Calallen is still on their minds, and in fact, Shannon added that they talk about it a lot.

“We know that we had the capability last year (to make it to state) and did not play our best game against Calallen,” he said. “We have talked about that game quite a bit since last year and it is definitely a driving force for our girls. They have a bad taste in their mouth from that game and I think that is what propels us forward this year.”

Beating Calallen is just one of their goals and Shannon added that they have bigger goals than that this year.

“The main goal since we started our offseason last year is to win the state championship and that is our focus,” he said.

A look at the team

Boerne brings back a good nucleus and wasn’t hit too hard by graduation. In fact, Shannon said the amount of experience they return is probably their greatest asset this season.

“I think our strength is that we have virtually everyone back, plus this year we have more depth then we had last year,” he said.

Included on this year’sroster is Melissa Garza, Kenslee Sawyer, Sophia Harper, Sophia Brumley, Hannah Bowen, Kaelin Daniel, Reagan Mroz, Madison Davis, Kylie Combs, Taylor Hudson, Regina Hernandez, A’Marie Ramirez, Lily Griffith, Brooke Milton, Anna Marino, Yaya Arroniz, Kassie Lozano, Kelsey Hernandez, Kate Spiekerman, Tommie Rand, Taylor Durham, Annika Fairchild, Kennedy Luevano, Madeline Davis and Avery Ukeiley.

Combs was last year’s District 26-4A MVP, Bowen was the Newcomer of the Year, while Hernandez, Griffith and Madeline Davis were first-team all-district selections.

Lozano, Spiekerman and Madison Davis were second-team all-district picks, while Hudson and Daniel were named honorable mention.

A look at the district

The Boerne girls have been the dominant team in district and have an impressive streak going. The Lady Hounds have won seven straight district titles and have done it with five different head coaches during that span, Boerne’s record in district play during the last seven years has been 58-1-2.

Shannon said they want to keep the streak going but added that it’s a good district this year as witnessed by ties against Fredericksburg and Wimberley and a loss to Davenport to start 26-4A play in 2022.

“I feel we have a very competitive district,” Shannon said. “I think Fred, Wimberley, Canyon Lake and Davenport are all solid teams. The region has many teams that are good that we need to keep an eye on like Rockport-Fulton, Calallen and London.”

The Lady Hounds played in three tournaments this year, Northside, Southwest and the Governor’s Cup. Shannon said he likes the competition they saw in those tournaments.

“We have played some quality 5A and 6A schools and have looked good against them,” he said. “I’m happy where we are currently and look forward to a productive district and playoff run.”
