Due to make-up district games, the Geneva School of Boerne boys basketball schedule has looked more like a college schedule with three games per week over the past two weeks.
Most recently, the Eagles took on St. Anthony and won 72-59 after having just competed against them and winning in overtime.
In the rematch, Geneva triumphed again, 75-59.
The Eagles are now on a five-game district winning streak and are currently tied for fourth in district.
The five-game win streak secured the Eagles a playoff spot for the second consecutive year in TAPPS 5A.
“This is a big deal for our program and athletes,” Geneva coach Julius McNeal said. “We knew moving to the 5A division would be a step up in competition, and for the most part our guys have answered the call. I’m proud of this team and the effort they put forth every night.”
McNeal said of the three-games-in-a-week schedule, “it has been a grueling but rewarding experience.”
In the rematch with St. Anthony, the Yellow Jackets were winning at the end of the first quarter, 15-13, but the Eagles caught them in the second after outscoring them, 24-15, for the 37-30 halftime lead. Geneva won the third, 22-17, and entered the fourth with a 12-point lead at 59-47.
The Eagles closed it out by taking the final stanza as well, 16-12.
Colton Lutz was the team’s leading scorer with 27 points, Chaz Lutz added 18 points and Griffin Freiling netted 13.
The Eagles are 16-14 overall and 6-6 in district after the win.
