Friday’s boys soccer match between Boerne Champion and Kerrville Tivy was a game of momentum swings but it was the Chargers who had the final momentum swing go its way.
Champion and Tivy were knotted up at 3-3 but a mistake by the Antlers helped the Chargers defeat the Kerrville school, 4-3.
Champion is 4-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in district. They close out the first round of 26-5A action Tuesday at Buda Johnson and then kick off the second round of league play Friday at New Braunfels Canyon.
The Chargers had a fast start and scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the match for the quick 3-0 lead and was very effective with the throw-in pass.
Champion’s shutout held until the second half when a penalty kick got things going for the Antlers. They converted the PK, and then scored two more goals to tie it up at 3-3.
It appeared that it would end that way but with five minutes left, the Chargers pressured Tivy and had the ball in the Antlers box. A Kerrville defender tried to clear the ball but accidentally kick it straight into the back of the net for an own goal and a 4-3 Chargers lead.
Champion kept the Antlers from scoring in the final few minutes to get the win.
Gabe Hernandez finished with 2 goals and JP Martinez scored the other goal, while Crew Pulliam recorded 2 assists and Matthew Magaw and Calvin Perryman both had single assists.
