The Boerne Champion girls basketball team continues to win close games against quality opponents.
The Lady Chargers were at it again Tuesday and defeated Smithson Valley on the road by a point, 55-54. They also beat Kerrville Tivy by two points on Jan. 3 and held off a late charge by Pieper last Friday.
Champion improves to 21-5 overall and 5-1 in district. They were home Friday to host Seguin to close out the first round of 26-5A action and begin the second round Tuesday against Wagner.
The Lady Chargers had a good start on Tuesday and took a 17-11 lead into the second quarter where they topped the Rangers, 14-12, for the 31-23 halftime lead.
Both teams scored 12 points in the third so Champion’s lead remained at 8 points at 43-35 as the game went to the fourth quarter.
The Rangers turned in their best stanza of the night in the fourth and tallied 19 points in the period. Smithson Valley was good at the line in the fourth and went 6 for 6 at the stripe and finished the game at 9 for 12 for 75 percent.
Champion tallied 12 points in the fourth as Adriana Barreiro scored 7 of their 12 points. The Chargers struggled at the line and went 4 for 9 at the stripe in the final quarter and finished the game 6 for 13 for 46 percent, but it was good enough for a win.
Madyson Marquard led the team with 15 points, Barreiro scored 13, Grace Erbstoesser came up with 9 points, Bralyn Gault netted 6, Hudson Lonsdale and Christine McGinn both chipped in with 5 and Alivia Gonzales added 2.
