Deer hosts Hondo to close out non-district action

The Comfort girls basketball team hosted Hondo on Tuesday and lost by 10 points in their final tune-up before district play begins.

The Owls won 48-38 and dropped Comfort to 11-13 to close out non-district action. The Deer hosted Brady on Friday for their first District 5-3A contest.

In Tuesday’s contest, the Deer stayed close throughout the game, trimming the Hondo lead to two points at the 1:13 mark of the third quarter.

Hondo landed a pair of 3s from Jocelyn Campos and Kimmie Kingsley in that last minute to extend their advantage.

The Deer closed to within three points on a coast-tocoast drive and a 3-pointer from freshman point guard Jael Hernandez. But the Lady Owls made one more push to take the victory.

Meghan Davis led Comfort with 10 points, Katie Haffner and Hernandez added 7 points apiece, Bailey Feldman and Jackie Zapata scored 5 each, while Katelyn Cook and Lula Jaime both netted 2.

Davis grabbed 11 rebounds and Zapata had 9 boards, while Feldman and Haffner both snagged 6 rebounds. Davis and Jaime dished out 3 assists each, while Hernandez and Davis came up with 2 steals apiece.
