Ellis excited to be Chargers head football coach

Boerne Champion’s Blane Ellis said he has always wanted to be a head football coach and now Ellis will get the chance.

Boerne Champion’s Blane Ellis said he has always wanted to be a head football coach and now Ellis will get the chance.

Ellis was announced as the new Champion head football coach at Monday’s Boerne ISD School Board meeting, replacing Keith Kaiser, who is stepping down from the position.

Ellis said he’s ready to go. “I’m really excited,” he said. “This is something I’ve had a vision for for a long time. I came out here with Coach Kaiser 10 years ago, eventually wanting to be a head coach.”

Ellis coached with Kaiser at Northside Marshall for four years and then spent the last 10 with him at Champion. Ellis said he mentioned to Kaiser over the years that he wanted to become a head coach at some point.

“It’s something we talked about, it was one of my goals and I couldn’t be happier,” Ellis said. “He’s been a trem endous support throughout the years.”

Ellis said they announced it to the team on Tuesday of this week before one of their offseason workouts and that it was well received.

“It’s been really, really good, they were excited,” he said. “We announced it to them, charged them with it and then went out and had a great workout.”

Ellis admits that he’s applied for other head coaching jobs over the years but was glad they never worked out.

“Yes, I had applied for several jobs in the area, but I was really picky about what jobs I applied for because we love Boerne,” he said.

Ellis said he will make some changes to the program but would also keep some things the same after evaluat- ing everything with his staff during the offseason. The new head coach said he will definitely keep in place the spring game that takes place each May.

Champion is coming off a season in which they didn’t make the playoffs, but Ellis said he hopes to change that next fall.

“We have high expectations moving forward and our expectations are to be successful next year. We’re looking forward to the challenge and getting the Chargers back to where they belong,” he said. “We want to win a district championship. We have a good core group of guys coming back and our (district) opponents are graduating a lot of players so I expect to see a lot of success.”

Ellis was previously the team’s defensive coordinator, and they will have to find a replacement there and Ellis was also the school’s head track coach, and that program will have to find someone to take that role as well as Ellis settles into his new job. Those moves are expected to take place after the Christmas break.
