Geneva School of Boerne and Brentwood Christian were engaged in a defensive struggle Tuesday night in Boerne as the two boys basketball teams kicked off district play.

Neither squad scored more than 40 points in the game, but the Bears found a way to win, 39-36.

The Eagles are 14-5 overall and start district at 0-1. They host FEAST on Saturday.

Brentwood was only leading by a baseball like score of 8-3 at the end of the first quarter and things didn’t improve a whole lot offensively for either in the second period after the Bears won it 8-5 for the 16-8 halftime lead.

According to Eagles coach Julius McNeal, Geneva was only 10 for 43 from the field in the game but their defense kept them in it.

Thing picked up for the teams offensively in the second half as they both hit in double digits in the final two stanzas. Geneva cut into the lead in the third after they outscored the Bears, 15-12, to trail 28-23 as the game went into the fourth.

In the final stanza, the Eagles sliced into the Brentwood lead some more after winning the period, 13-11. Geneva made it a one-point game with nine seconds remaining, but the Bears finished it off for the 3-point win.

Spencer Yarbrough led the Eagles team with 14 points and Chaz Lutz scored 12.

NOTE: The Geneva girls team was scheduled to host Brentwood Christian as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday to open district action, but that game was called off because the Lady Bears had too many players out due to illness. The game will be made up later.
