Boerne High football coach Che Hendrix had one word to describe Chapel Hill, Friday’s opponent in this Friday’s 4A DI state semifinals contest in the Alamodome.
“Fast,” he answered when asked what he saw on film about the Bulldogs. “They’re very fast so the main thing is going to try to keep them in the box.”
Bulldogs running back Rickey Stewart is averaging 156 rushing yards per game and Demetrius Brisbon is rushing for 97 yards per contest, while receiver Deuce McGregor hauls in about 90 yards of passes per game.
Hendrix said that at this stage of the season, it doesn’t change how they prepare for a team even though they don’t know much about them and haven’t played any mutual opponents.
“We prepare the same, we watch film and talk to coaches who have played them,” he said. “We know people who played them, so once you have that on film, not much changes.”
Boerne has put up good numbers as well.
Greyhound quarterback Jaxon Baize has thrown for 49 touchdowns and more than 3,000 yards this year, while Braden Baize has more than 1,100 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns, 19 receiving and 2 on the ground. TJ Dement has added 15 touchdowns and Brooks Perez has 10 TDs this year.
Defensively, Hutson Hendrix leads the team with 10.2 tackles per game and Will French is at 7.8 stops per game, while Houston Hendrix has 6.7 tackles a contest.
McCoy Bruce has 4 interceptions and Jeffery Brown has caused 5 fumbles this year.
Friday’s contest will feature two high powered offenses and Coach Hendrix said the key for them will be to continue to stick with what’s gotten them this far. Basically, they aren’t going to try and reinvent the wheel before Friday.
“We’ve got to keep doing what we’ve been doing,” he said. “We have to tackle their running back and try to contain him. We’ll have to be able to throw it off the run and continue to get first downs. We have to play well in all three phases of the game.”
Boerne hasn’t been this far in the playoffs in almost two decades but Greyhound player McCoy Bruce said he and the rest of the team weren’t nervous before the start of last Friday’s game with Calallen and knew they would be fine.
“I was never really nervous for us because I knew we were ready,” he said. “We put the work in every morning and we’ve practiced all season, so we ready for the moment.”
It’s been in a while since the Greyhounds have been in this round, while Chapel Hill played in the state semis last year.
