SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne Champion boys basketball team put its perfect record on the line Monday when the Chargers visited San Antonio for a game against Marshall.

Marshall played the Chargers tough, but Champion prevailed 58-51 at Northside Gym.

The Chargers improved to 8-0 and will travel to Laredo this weekend for the Border Olympics Hoopfest that started Thursday and continues through Saturday.

In Monday’s game, the Chargers held a big lead, but Marshall always seemed to rally, although they could never catch Champion.

The Chargers were up 20-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Marshall outscored them in the second 19-13 to make it a 6-point game at the break, 33-27.

Champion had a good third quarter but not before the Rams cut the lead to three at 35-32 with 5:05 left in the stanza.

From there, Marshall didn’t score another point in the period, while the Chargers tallied the final 13 points of the quarter.

Quinn Grable and Baeden Burdick hit 3-pointers, Grable added a 3-point play, and then Mason Wyatt and Charlie Georgelos both made 2-point buckets for the 13-0 run to give the Chargers a 48-32 lead.

The Rams didn’t go away quietly. Marshall answered with a 13-2 run of its own after they heated up from the outside and knocked down three 3s during their run and the lead was down to five at 50-45 with 3:41 left.

From there, Champion closed it out by outscoring the Rams 8-6 down the stretch for the 7-point win. Marshall continued to shoot it well from the outside in the fourth and finished the quarter with five 3s, but the Chargers were good at the freethrow line as 6 of their final 8 points came at the stripe on 6 of 6 shooting. Grable went 4 for 4 and Wyatt was 2 for 2 at the line for Champion’s final 6 points.

Braden Baum led the Chargers with 18 points, Grable and Georgelos both netted 10, Dakarai Hodge added 8, Jackson Marshall had 5, Wyatt scored 4 and Burdick 3.
