August 19, 1942 – November 21, 2022
Dan Raymond Banks of Boerne, TX, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, at the age of 80.
Dan was born on Aug. 19, 1942, in San Antonio, TX, to Raymond L. Banks and Lorine M. (Hielscher) Banks. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in San Antonio on Aug. 30, 1942, and confirmed into the Christian faith at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church of San Antonio in April 1956. He became a member of Concordia Lutheran Church on March 25, 1962. He graduated from Thomas Edison High School in 1960, completed service in the U.S. Army Reserves and later graduated from St. Mary’s University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
Dan went to work for Southwestern Bell, where he met his first wife, Wynona (Spencer) Banks. They were married Oct. 7, 1967, and were blessed with two daughters, Laura and Jennifer. Dan and Wynona were married 40 wonderful years until Wynona’s passing in 2008.
As a widower, he then met Julie Verschoyle of San Antonio, who called him the “love of her life.” They were married at Concordia on May 15, 2010, and enjoyed life in Fair Oaks Ranch, TX.
Dan had a long career in telecommunications engineering with Southwestern Bell/AT&T until his early retirement in 1991. He then went to work with Alexander Utility Engineering until he fully retired in 2019.
After retiring, he successfully co-founded Wise Star Energy to pursue a longtime passion for the oil and gas industry.
In 2010, he ventured into local politics and ran for Kendall County Judge.
Although he didn’t win, he ran an honorable and straightforward campaign, and had a great time doing so.
Dan was a very active member at Concordia, including service as Elder for many years, chairman of the ministry building committee at the Basse Road campus, contributed to plans for the 1604/Huebner campus and was president of the congregation in 1980.
He loved fishing, hunting, golf, the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys, barbeque and cars (especially Chevys) – but most of all, his family and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his second wife of 12 years, Julie Verschoyle Banks; daughters, Laura A. Arldt and husband James of Austin, Jennifer L. Lee and husband Timothy of Bastrop and their daughters Abigail Maxine and Elizabeth Louise; foster daughter, Ann Marie Johnston and husband Matt of Rockport and their daughters, Sarah Evelyn and Briannah Paige; brother-in-law Joe E. Spencer and wife Mary of New Braunfels; his nephew, Joseph J. Spencer; his niece, Robin Marie Anderson of Houston; great-niece Victoria Marie Anderson of Houston, TX; and several cousins.
