Boerne’s win over Pleasanton in the second-round of the playoffs last Friday did a few things for the Greyhounds.
First, it advances Boerne to the third round where they’ll face Port Lavaca Calhoun Friday.
The contest kicks off at 6 p.m. in Jourdanton, also the site of their 2020 playoff game that Boerne won 27-24.
Secondly, it earned BHS 12 wins to tie the 2004 team for the most victories by a Greyhound football squad in a single season.
Thirdly, it gives the opportunities to play Thanksgiving weekend, always a highlight for a Texas high school football team.
As far as the 12 wins and trying to earn 13, BHS coach Che Hendrix said he and the team aren’t focused on that right now.
“We’ll worry about records later,” he said.
As far as playing on Thanksgiving weekend, it’s getting to be a regular thing for the Greyhounds team that’ll be playing in its third straight game over the turkey-eating holiday weekend.
“The saying is ‘you labor on Labor Day so you can give thanks on Thanksgiving,” Hendrix said. “We’re thrilled to continue to keep playing. We don’t take winning for granted; we know how hard it is. I think our guys are enjoying the whole thing.”
While the Greyhounds have been consistent this year and reeled off 12 straight wins, the Sandcrabs have been up and down and lost seven straight before winnings its last five, three in district and two in the playoffs.
“I’m ultra-proud of Coach Whitaker and their program, that’s a huge statement to who they are as a program,” Hendrix said. “They didn’t panic and didn’t quit, they had a lot of adversity early and to stay the course, it shows what kind of character they have. We’re going to have to play hard and play well, it’s going to be a physical game and we’re excited to play them.”
Calhoun beat Alice in the first round (35-26) and Canyon Lake last week (28-13), while the Hounds have defeated Taylor (4213) and Pleasanton (50-21).
For what it’s worth, Pleasanton beat Calhoun this year in district play, 25-19.
The Sandcrabs run the triple option well and Hendrix said they’ll have to shore up a few things defensively because Pleasanton found a few gaps in Boerne’s run defense and scored on two of its first three drives before the Greyhounds adjusted to slow them down.
Pleasanton’s first drive covered 75 yards on 12 plays and chewed 6:02 off the clock before they scored.
“We’ve got to prepare better against the run, they did some good things to us early,” Hendrix said. “They changed their scheme up and gave us some problems, it’s a great test for us going to play a Calhoun team that is going to run the triple option.”
Boerne’s offense was clicking Friday night and rolled to 457 yards. The Hounds ran for 238 yards, with 199 coming from TJ Dement, who had 171 of those at halftime to go with three touchdowns.
The Greyhounds have been shorthanded at the running back spot with some injuries but are expected to get some help this week against the Sandcrabs.
Dement said he didn’t mind carrying the load while the other backs were out.
“I’ve got to do it for those guys who can’t be out there doing it,” he said.
Jaxon Baized tossed four more touchdowns on Friday, three to his brother Braden Baize who had 5 catches for 110 yards with 3 TDs. Houston Hendrix hauled in the other Jaxon Baize touchdown pass and almost scored on another after he was tackled at the 1-yard line.
“When we can run it and stayed balanced, we’re pretty tough to stop,” Coach Hendrix said.
