The Boerne Champion girls basketball team visited San Antonio to take on 6A Warren at Taylor Field House on Tuesday and recorded the 58-51 win.
The Lady Chargers improved to 5-2 overall and will get a little bit of a break. They were off the rest of this week and won’t play again until next week with games at home on Monday and Tuesday.
Champion hosts Fredericksburg on Monday, 12:30 p.m. and also hosts Stevens on Tuesday, 12:30 p.m.
After Tuesday, the Lady Chargers are off for another week for the Thanksgiving break and won’t play again until they host Alamo Heights on Nov. 29.
Champion hit seven 3s in Tuesday’s game and knocked down two of them in the first quarter behind the shooting of Hudson Lonsdale and Madyson Marquard for the early 11-7 lead.
Bralyn Gault hit another 3-pointer in the second quarter and helped the Chargers outscore the Warriors, 17-13, to give Champion a 28-20 halftime advantage.
The Lady Chargers also won the third quarter, 16-12, and drained two more 3s from Marquard and Olivia Keilman and opened up a 44-32 advantage.
The only quarter the Chargers didn’t win came in the fourth when Warren outscored them 19-14 to put a dent in the lead but not enough to prevent Champion from collecting the victory.
Keilman and Lonsdale each nailed 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to account for the team’s seven made 3s in the game but where Champion really hurt the Warriors was at the free-throw line where they went 11 for 13 for 85 percent shooting. The Chargers went 6 for 7 at the line in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.
It's a far cry from their last game where they finished 10 for 27 in the championship at the Rouse tournament.
“We were much improved from the free-throw line,” said Coach Jason Sanders.
Marquard paced the team with 16 points and Londsale added 12 to make it two in double figures. Grace Erbstoesser was one point shy of double figures and finished with 9, Adriana Barreiro and Keilman netted 6 points apiece, Gault scored 5 and Addison Hankins chipped in with 4 points.
