Friday’s second-round TAPPS playoff football game will feature two teams that have won recent state championships when the Geneva School of Boerne faces Cypress Christian School.

Friday’s second-round tilt will take place in Hallettsville, 7 p.m.

Geneva is three years removed from its state championship game when the Eagles defeated Lubbock Christian, 49-18, during the 2019 season, while Cypress Christian School won it all last year.

Ironically, both schools made it to the state game two years in a row and lost in their first appearance, only to return and win it the next year.

The Warriors went 12-2 last year on its way to the state title and are down a little after heavy graduation losses.

The Warriors had a firstround bye after winning its district and finished the year at 6-4 overall and went 2-0 in district and Eagles head coach Julius Scott said Cypress Christian returns enough talent to be dangerous.

“They’re the defending state champs,” Scott said. “They’re very well coached with very good athletes. With that being said, this is not our first rodeo in this situation.”

Geneva still has a few players left over from their ’19 title team and they would be seniors this year and those players, along with others, helped the Eagles defeat The Woodlands Legacy Prep last week, 49-13.

It was tied at 7-7 early but Geneva reeled off six straight touchdowns to open up a 49-7 lead before Legacy Prep tallied the final touchdown of the game in brutal weather conditions that included a stiff wind and cold temperatures.

The Eagles didn’t complete a pass on five attempts but then again, they didn’t have to because their ground game was working so well.

Geneva rolled to 398 yards on the ground on 57 carries for an average of almost 7 yards per pop. Jayden McCammon led the rushing attack for the Eagles with 170 yards on 26 carries and 4 touchdowns, while Landon Grimes rushed for 146 yards on 20 totes and 3 TDs.

George Viña, KP FitzGerald, Caeden Sandifer and JM Raimondo also ran with the ball for Geneva.

Scott said the Eagles were just trying to win the game.

“We are trying to score points,” he said about his team that recorded 25 first downs, compared to 7 for Legacy Prep.

Defensively, the Eagles yielded less than 200 total yards in the game – 172 on the ground on 30 carries and 34 yards through the air on 2 of 6 passing.

The Geneva defense came up with three interceptions after Hayden Allen, Luke Kaiser and Grimes all had picks, while Fitz-Gerald and Kaiser both came up with fumble recoveries.

FitzGerald finished with 17 tackles in the game, Viña had 14, Logan Fritcher added 13 tackles and Kaiser totaled 10.

An interesting note is that both teams played Austin Brentwood Christian this year and beat the Bears by very similar scores.

Geneva won its game over Brentwood Christian, 42-7, on Oct. 10, and the Warriors took its game over the Bears on Oct. 28 in a district contest, 43-7, just one point difference.

Scott said their scores against Brentwood Christian don’t mean too much to him.

“I don’t think common opponents tell us a lot at this time of year,” he said. “Who wants it more does.”
