ROUND ROCK – The Boerne High varsity cross country teams wrapped up their 2022 seasons Friday morning at this year’s 4A state meet.

Both the girls and boys squads raced in misty conditions at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock and the Lady Greyhounds finished 11th in the state and the boys were 16th.

BHS coach Chris Carter said for both teams to make it to state is a great way to cap the year.

“We’re lucky enough to be running on the last day of the season and we bring a bunch of kids back, so we’ll try to get better and do it again next year,” he said. “This is a good step, we put the program going in the right direction.”

There was only one senior that ran on Friday for both the girls (Maddie Morris) and boys teams (Chase Balderas), which means that 12 of the 14 runners who competed at state are eligible to return next year.

“It’s about getting here and having experience and knowing how to get here,” Carter said.

Varsity Girls

Celina won the girls 4A meet with 70 points, Fredericksburg earned silver with 86 points and Canyon Randall finished third with 108 points to claim bronze.

The Lady Greyhounds tallied 260 points for 11th place in the field of 16 teams.

Two sophomores paced the Boerne girls after Eleanor Davis and Mary Marino finished 28th and 38th after Davis clocked in at 12:39 and Marino completed the two-mile race in 12:50.5. Senior Maddie Morris recorded a time of 13:02.9 for 48th, junior Endie Boddie turned in a time of 13:32.3 for 68th and freshman Mahaley Merkins was 78th after running a 13:47.6.

Freshman Kelsey Farar finished the course in 14:10.1 for 92nd and freshman Sophia Karageorge placed 102nd with a time of 14:24.4 to round out the team.

Varsity Boys

Canyon claimed the 4A boys title with 40 points after they had four finish in the top seven, La Feria came in second with 107 points and San Elizario scored 147 points for third.

The BHS boys were 16th after scoring 335 points.

Junior Tayson Farar had Boerne’s best finish after he placed 37th with a time of 17:42.6, freshman Carsten Bain came in 57th with a time of 18:14, junior Caleb Benchoff completed the course in a time of 18:29 for 71st, freshman Barrett Crofut clocked in at 18:34.9 for 75th, junior Parker Powell finished 95th with a time of 19:07.1, senior Chase Balderas was one spot back in 96th with a time of 19:15.3 and junior Cole Palmer came in 99th after posting a 19:25.1.
