Boerne High’s historic football season continues Thursday when the Greyhounds open the playoffs against Taylor in Marble Falls.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Mustang Stadium.
The Greyhounds enter the contest at 10-0, the only time a BHS football team has achieved a perfect regular season. The 1963 BHS team went undefeated but had a tie so while they were unbeaten, they weren’t perfect like the 2022 team is.
After last Friday’s win over Fredericksburg, there was a trophy presentation for winning this year’s district title, Boerne’s third in a row – something never done before – and for ending the regular season with a perfect record, also a first in program history. “I’m happy for the players and the program, it’s really hard to go 10-0,” BHS coach Che Hendrix said. “To have the focus and play the way we did, I’m just really proud.”
While Boerne is 10-0, Taylor has had its share of ups and downs and enters Thursday’s contest at 5-5 overall and 2-3 in district.
Taylor faced Burnet last Friday for the final playoff spot up for grabs in District 13-4A DI. It was a winner-take-all contest where the victor took fourth and the loser moved on to basketball.
The game was weather delayed and didn’t finish until past midnight, but the Ducks prevailed, 41-40. Burnet really hurt itself with three missed extra points in the game.
Hendrix said the Ducks have good speed and try to get around the edge. He noted that Taylor running back Andrias Fisher and wide receiver Jarvis Anderson are dangerous.
Fisher is averaging 98 yards per game on the ground and Anderson is averaging about 70 receiving yards per contest. Fisher has 11 touchdowns this year and Anderson has 14.
“They have two good athletes with real good speed,” the coach said. “They run the ball well, they run a lot of plays to the outside zone to get to the edge.”
At this point of the season, Hendrix said his team isn’t going to reinvent the wheel, they’ll just continue to do what they’ve been doing all year.
“Defensively, we’ll continue to play with what we call pickets in the fence, everybody has a gap and playing good team defense is how you stop a team like this,” he said. “Offensively, we want to run the ball and that sets up play action and gives us the chance to throw.”
The Hounds were able to run the ball against the Battlin’ Billies last week, racking up 147 yards on the ground. T.J. Dement finished with 87 of those yards on 13 carries and a touchdown, while Dement also caught five passes for 100 yard and two more touchdowns.
Dement scored all three of his touchdowns in the first quarter to help the Hounds jump out to a 28-0 lead in the opening stanza.
The Greyhounds are a little banged up at the running back spot, but Hendrix said Dement picked up the slack in last Friday’s game.
“TJ has done a great job, he’s so versatile and a great receiver too,” the coach said. “He’s got to be the player of the game, he was unbelievable. He’s one of our best players and a great kid. What a great night for him.”
Braden Baize also caught a TD pass from Jaxon Baize in the opening period and then Braden Baize ran one in out of the Wildcat formation to give Boerne a 35-0 lead after five Joe Ballenger kicks.
The Greyhounds scored on its first five possessions and only gave up three points in Friday’s 42-3 win. Carson Coffland had the team’s final score on a 32-yard touchdown reception from Jaxon Baize, who has now thrown 37 TD passes this year.
Defensively, McCoy Bruce came up with two interceptions and Charlie Stahl had the other as the BHS defense set up the offense with short fields, especially in that first quarter.
Hutson Hendrix finished with 10 tackles in the game, Braden Bays made 8 tackles, Caleb Hamby had 7 stops, while Will French had 6.
The weather was definitely a factor last Friday. Fred had to drive into the wind in the opening period and couldn’t muster much offense. The Hounds burned all three of its timeouts in the first quarter to force the Battlin’ Billies to punt into the wind and it worked as BHS recorded four TDs in the stanza.
With such a big lead, the Hounds shifted focus after scoring on its first five possessions and went into ball-control mode to shorten the game and get ready for this week.
