The Geneva School of Boerne football team will look to bounce back from last week’s 28-0 loss to Holy Cross as the Eagles begin postseason play this week.
Geneva tangles with Legacy Prep Christian Academy this Friday in Boerne, 7 p.m.
Both the Eagles and Lions finished the regular season at 5-5 overall. Geneva went 2-1 in district with last Friday’s setback to Holy Cross their only loss in league play.
Holy Cross defeated the Eagles 28-0 for the district title, leaving Geneva as the second-place team from TAPPS 3-III.
Legacy Prep Christian Academy finished district play at 1-2 and in third place. The Lions went 4-0 at home and 1-5 on the road, which should help Geneva.
Geneva and Legacy Prep played two common opponents this year, Shiner St. Paul and Brentwood Christian.
The Eagles beat both those schools, defeating St. Paul, 35-12, and Brentwood Christian. 42-7, while the Lions split those two games, losing to St. Paul, 49-6, and beating Brentwood Christian, 55-37, last week.
Geneva coach Julius Scott said the Lions have gotten better as the year has progressed.
“They have steadily improved over the course of the season,” he said. “They have a ball-controlling offense and run the option, so we will need to know our assignments on defense.”
The Eagles were shutout last week for just the second time of the year as they faced Holy Cross shorthanded because of injuries and sickness.
They should be closer to full strength for this week’s game, but regardless of who is playing, Scott said they need to be more consistent.
“It seems as though when we do get a drive going, penalties keep us behind the chains,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll improve.”
Geneva struggled last week against Holy Cross and only totaled 96 yards on offense and went 1 for 8 through the air. Landon Grimes had a solid game for the Eagles and tallied 67 of those yards on the ground on 13 carries.
The winner of Friday’s game gets Cypress Christian School, which is off this week because they won district and get a first-round bye.
A Geneva rematch with Holy Cross could happen if both reach the third round. The Eagles would have to win its next two, while Holy Cross is off this week by virtue of winning district and earning a bye but will play next week in the second round.
