Comfort’s victory over South San West Campus last week in its last game of the regular season earned the Bobcats a playoff spot this year.
Comfort takes on the 3A Taft Greyhounds in the first round Friday in Seguin at Matadors Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Taft won District 16-3A DII, and the Bobcats were the fourth-place team in District 15-3A DII.
Comfort coach Brandon Easterly has scouted the Greyhounds and said they are very good. Taft finished the year at 8-2 overall and went a perfect 6-0 in league play, while Comfort was 3-7 this season and finished 3-3 in district.
Taft’s district included Odem, Santa Rosa, Monte Alto, Hebbronville, Banquete and George West. Odem is really the only team that played the Greyhounds close after Taft beat them, 33-26.
All the other district games were pretty much blowouts with scores of 48-0, 43-7, 48-13, 29-6 and 26-0.
In non-district Taft dropped games to Mathis, 50-46, and to Three Rivers, 42-31, for its only two losses this year.
Easterly said the Greyhounds are good on both sides of the ball.
“Their offense is very good, their quarterback, running back, receivers and offensive line is good,” he said. “Their defense plays hard and doesn’t give up many points.”
Comfort went into last Friday’s game needing a win over the Cougars and they got it, 55-7, to snag the fourth and final playoff spot available in the district.
Easterly said they played well against West Campus in a must-win, pressure game.
“It was great to see the guys play an entire four quarters and have success in all three phases of the game,” the coach said.
In last week’s game against the Cougars, Comfort scored first and went up 7-0 just 22 seconds into the contest, but West Campus tied it a few minutes later after the Bobcats fumbled on a trick play to give the Cougars a short field.
West Campus scored and it was tied at 7-7, but Comfort reeled off seven straight TDs to blow it open. The Cats scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, two in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth and tallied points in all four quarters.
Comfort recorded 453 yards from scrimmage, 430 of those coming on the ground, to go with 16 first downs and they held West Campus to 105 yards and five first downs.
Comfort had two 100yard rushers after Topper Sterling ran 10 times for 101 yards to go with three touchdowns, while Jaydin Steward tallied 126 yards on just three totes to go with two TDs.
Sam Tucker and Micah Nye also scored rushing touchdowns, while Mason West caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Nye.
Easterly said his team has to play mistake-free football to have a chance on Friday.
“We need to control the ball while taking opportunities for big plays on offense,” he said. “On defense, we have to tackle well and slow down their quarterback and running back.”
