Boerne Champion Coach Keith Kaiser closed out the “greatest 10 years of my life” in spectacular fashion, leading the Chargers to a 56-31 victory over MacArthur, Friday at Heroes Stadium.
“The parents were incredible, and the kids were super,” said Kaiser, whose retirement was announced this week “And I didn’t play one down (of football).
Quarterback Jordan Ballin helped make his coach’s last night on the job a memorable one, scoring six total touchdowns - five throwing and one running - in Boerne Champion’s second straight victory to close out its season. The Chargers ran over Lehman of Kyle for a 37-14 victory the week prior.
Ballin’s performance was so spectacular that Kaiser said he “hated” pulling him out of the game in the fourth quarter.
“He’s a gamer,” Kaiser said. “Those days of (spectacular performances) aren’t easy, but I’m so proud of him. He gave us great opportunities to play in a lot of games.”
Ballin started off his impressive night by connecting with Evan Bates on a 29-yard touchdown pass to open up scoring for the game early in the first quarter.
MacArthur responded with a 6-yard score from Michael Murach to Colton Cornwell.
Boerne Champion raised their score with an 80-yard kick return from Sawyer Bolli.
The Brahmas answered with a 60-yard score from Murach to Elijah Smith to knot the score at 14 at the 5:09 mark in the first quarter.
The Chargers took control the rest of the way as they scored 42 of the next 45 points in the first, second and third quarters.
Running back Colin Ryan scored on a keeper to bolster Boerne Champion’s lead to 21-14 at the 3:33 mark in the first quarter.
The Chargers followed that up with a Ballin 42-yard touchdown pass to Kannon Brooks at the 11:11 mark in the second quarter.
The Brahmas scored on a field goal to narrow their deficit to 11.
Ballin widened the Chargers’ lead, scoring on three consecutive plays - first on a throw to Ryan, second on a 61-yard keeper and lastly on a 45-yard connection to Brooks again to give Boerne Champion a 49-17 lead into halftime.
Ballin closed out his night hitting Chase Riha for paydirt at the 6:30 mark in the third quarter to give the Chargers a 56-17 lead.
MacArthur didn’t stop fighting despite being in a sizable hole.
The Brahmas scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter - the first coming on a Rudy Vega two-yard keeper and the last on a 50-yard run by Zachary Hayes.
