UIL announces district alignments for next two school years

The UIL announced its district alignments for the next two years last Thursday and it was a mixed bag for Champion, Boerne High and Comfort, with a few changes and surprises but also some familiar foes.

The UIL announced its district alignments for the next two years last Thursday and it was a mixed bag for Champion, Boerne High and Comfort, with a few changes and surprises but also some familiar foes.

There is a football district and then basically a district for most other sports that the UIL labels the volleyball and basketball districts.

As far as football districts, the UIL tries to keep schools with comparable enrollments matched up against each other in each classification, so the bigger schools go Division I and the smaller ones go Division II, but there is no such thing as DI and DII in volleyball or basketball in each classification, only in football.

Schools can appeal the alignments but the UIL generally doesn’t change them unless there’s a justifiable reason.

Boerne Champion

The Champion football program stayed a 5A but moved up from Division II to Division I and is in a stout football district.

The Chargers will play Buda Hays, Canyon, Smithson Valley, Lehman, MacArthur, Wagner and Seguin for the next two years.

In the basketball and volleyball district, the Chargers will be included with Canyon, Pieper, Smithson Valley, Kerrville Tivy, Veterans Memorial, Wagner and Seguin.

Boerne High

The big news for the Greyhounds is that they stayed a 4A. They were, and have been, on the cusp of moving up a classification in the last few alignments, but have managed to stay below the cutoff number.

The BHS football team will be a 4A Division I school and get some new district foes in Fredericksburg, Kennedy and Memorial, while Somerset and Uvalde will stay in Boerne’s district. The Hounds and the Battlin’ Billies have played just about every year but weren’t district foes for the last few seasons.

In basketball and volleyball, Boerne’s opponents stayed basically the same. The Hounds will challenge Bandera, Canyon Lake, Davenport, Fredericksburg, Navarro and Wimberley. All those schools are in Boerne’s district now, except for Navarro.

Comfort High

Of all the public schools in Kendall County, Comfort was probably affected the most by the UIL’s alignments.

They will stay in Region IV for football but move to Region I for volleyball and basketball. The football team also dropped down from Division I to Division II.

The Bobcat football team will compete against all new opponents in Dilley, Karnes City, Natalia, Nixon Smiley, Poth and South San West Campus.

In volleyball and bas ketball, Comfort moves to Region I and will play IDEA Montopolis, Blanco, Brady, Florence, Ingram and Llano.
