CHS Deer maintain grip on third place in district race

The Comfort girls basketball team solidified its grip on the No. 3 spot in District 25-3A by holding off the Llano Lady Jackets Saturday night in Comfort.

The Comfort girls basketball team solidified its grip on the No. 3 spot in District 25-3A by holding off the Llano Lady Jackets Saturday night in Comfort.

With the win the Deer improve to 13-16 overall and 3-4 in district. They travel to Ingram on Tuesday in the regular-season finale before opening playoffs next week.

Comfort was leading 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored Llano in the second, 6-4, for the 16-11 halftime lead in Saturday’s defensive battle.

The Deer pulled away in the third by winning the stanza, 14-6, and opened up a 30-17 lead. Llano did outscore CHS in the fourth but only by two points and the Deer held on for the 9-point win.

Points were hard to come by and nobody was in double digits for Comfort. Daniela Hernandez was the team’s top scorer with 9 points, Meghan Davis added 7, Ashlynn Rodriguez, Erin Alt, Denise Ceja and Katie Haffner all finished with 4 points apiece, while Kallie Doss and Emily Rivera both netted 2.

Davis grabbed 8 rebounds, Rodriguez came up with 7 steals and Hernandez dished out 4 assists.
