Boerne Champion will close out its 2022 regular season this Friday when the Chargers challenge MacArthur in San Antonio.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Heroes Stadium.
Champion coach Keith Kaiser will be facing his alma mater as the Chargers look to end the season on a positive note by winning two straight.
Kaiser said as time has gone by, facing Mac just doesn’t have the same implications that it used to have for him.
“Early in my career it was a big deal. Since it was my alma mater I wanted to win,” he said. “Now it’s another game. So much has changed and a lot has passed.”
Champion won last week’s homecoming game over Kyle Lehman, 37-14, to improve to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in district.
MacArthur is 2-7 overall and 1-5 in district and both Mac’s and Champion’s district wins have come against Lehman. The Brahmas beat them, 28-24.
Kaiser said MacArthur has improved.
“They’re better than they’ve been in the last few years we’ve played them,” he said. “They’re scoring some points but have made some mistakes that have hurt them.”
Kaiser said he can relate to the Brahmas and having a team make mistakes. Last week, the Chargers had three touchdowns wiped off the board because of penalties.
The outcome never seemed in doubt for the Chargers against Lehman, but Kaiser felt it should have been decided much sooner than it was.
“It’s been crazy just how much we’ve shot in ourselves in the foot this year,” he said. “We reverted back to our old ways where we were our own worst enemy at times.”
It was 30-0 in the third quarter before Lehman got on the board with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Jordan Ballin tossed four touchdown passes in the game, one each to Kannon Brooks, Cameron Logan, Chase Riha and Kaleb Krause before Colin Ryan ran in the final score.
The defense also came up with a safety, while Evan Kuhl and Sawyer Bolli both recorded interceptions to thwart Lehman scoring opportunities.
Last Friday’s win snapped a five-game losing streak that started with district play and knocked the team from playoff contention.
Champion has a chance to close out the year on a high note with a win on Friday.
“I know playoffs aren’t an option but we’re going to go to work and treat this last game as if it’s our biggest game of the season,” Kaiser said. “I know they’re going to work hard and get after it. I want these seniors to leave a footprint and go out strong.”
