Cats clinch with a win

The Comfort High football team may have been steamrolled last Friday by state-power and undefeated in district Poth, 62-14, but that didn’t change anything for the Bobcats.

Comfort can still make the playoffs with a win Friday at South San West Campus. The Cats visit the winless Cougars Friday at 7:30 p.m. in San Antonio.

Comfort and Karnes City are both 2-3 in district, but the Bobcats won their match up earlier this year, so a Comfort has the tiebreaker over them. If the Bobcats win, it doesn’t matter what Karnes City does.

There are a few other ways that Comfort can get in. If both the Cats and Karnes City win, or both lose, Comfort advances since Comfort has the tiebreaker.

The only way Comfort doesn’t get in is if they lose and Karnes City wins but the odds are definitely in Comfort’s favor heading into Friday since the Cats are playing the last-place team in the district and Karnes City is playing district front-runner Poth.

West Campus is suffering from growing pains after fielding a varsity team for the first time since 2007. They’ve played the last two years as a JV squad and this is their first varsity schedule in 15 years.

The Cougars are 0-9 overall and 0-5 in district. They’ve been shut out six times this year and have only scored 32 points all season. They only scored 18 points through their first eight games but on a positive note, they tallied 14 last week against Natalia in a 63-14 loss.

Comfort is a heavy favorite, but head coach Brandon Easterly said they aren’t going to change their approach regardless of their opponent.

“We’re taking it one game at a time,” he said. “We need to go out and improve.”

Easterly said it’s been the same approach all year long and added that they want to play a good game, which results in a win and hopefully give them some steam heading into the playoffs.

“We just want to get better at everything,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll take care of business so we can feel good going into the playoffs.”

Comfort did score twice against Poth, once in each half. The Pirates were winning 20-0 when Cats QB Micah Nye put the Cats on the board with a 1-yard run.

Early in the fourth quarter, Sam Tucker capped the Comfort scoring with a 7-yard sprint into the end zone.

The Cats did tally 238 yards in the game and came up with 11 first downs, while Poth recorded 444 total yards and 20 first downs.
