KENDALIA – Five fire departments fought for four hours Tuesday to douse a blaze that left Hillbillyz of Texas a smoking ruin.
The fire, which was turned in about 4 p.m., remains under investigation. Officials are hoping to determine the point of origin.
No injured were reported. Hillbillyz is at 1931 FM 473.
While the future of the establishment remains in limbo, folks at the popular watering hole sent a thankyou note to first responders via social media and said better days were ahead.
“These are good people that work to help others without any promise of financial gain. They help people because they want to. These are the people that make this country great,” the restaurant shared, according to WOAI TV. “As the phoenix rises from its ashes, so will Hillbillyz. More to come.”
The first 911 call came from a woman who reported seeing black smoke billowing from the restaurant.
Just a minute later, a man dialed emergency services to report flames engulfing the entire two-story structure. He warned there was a gas tank near the back building.
By 4:45 p.m., first responders noted blue and green flames inside the locale, indicating an extreme level of heat. The blue flames were doused 15 minutes later.
Several fire departments reported low water levels in their tanks during the incident, including one on Crabapple Road that dropped to 20 gallons.
Firefighters from the Waring, Sisterdale, Bergheim and Kendalia volunteer fire departments and from the Boerne Fire Department responded to the incident.
