First place will be on the line in 14-4A DI when the Boerne High football team visits Somerset Friday for a battle of district unbeatens.

Both the Greyhounds and Bulldogs are 3-0 in league play, so Friday’s winner will have the inside track to this year’s district title.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Somerset.

BHS is 8-0 overall and Somerset is 7-1, so both are having great seasons. Boerne coach Che Hendrix said Somerset coach Koy Detmer has the Bulldogs playing well.

“He’s done a great job, they’ve had back-to-back great seasons,” Hendrix said. “They’re good.”

Somerset’s lone loss this year came to Antonian, 45-27, a team that Greyhounds defeated 45-34.

Hendrix said there are a few things to glean from comparing common opponents but added that it doesn’t always tell the full story.

“We look but not because of the scores, we watch film to get a better sense of personnel,” he said. “The score doesn’t factor in that much, its more about match ups and seeing the differences and similarities.”

Somerset has scheduled this Friday’s contest for its annual homecoming game. Some schools schedule an “easy opponent” to get a win before the homecoming crowd but in this case it’s likely because they want to have a big crowd there.

The Greyhounds played there last year and there was a raucous crowd at Bulldog Stadium. Boerne was up 20-14 at the half and then pulled away by winning the second half, 31-7, for the 51-21 victory.

“It’s a concern going there, they had a great crowd last year and we expect nothing less than that,” Hendrix said. “They would love to beat us at home, they’ll bring a lot of energy and a lot of emotion, so we better be ready.”

In last year’s game, the Bulldogs tried to shut down Boerne’s run game, so the Hounds went to the air and threw for 447 yards and only ran for 26 yards.

Hendrix isn’t sure what defensive approach the Bulldogs will use this year, but said they have to be ready one way or another. He added that in their last four meetings, Somerset has used four different formations.

“We pride ourselves on being a balanced team,” he said.

When Somerset has the ball, they’ll line up in a pro style I-formation.

“They do a good job with shifts and motion, they look like the ’95 (Dallas) Cowboys,” Hendrix said. “Their quarterback will line up under center and is good. They throw it just enough.”

Boerne has had two run-away games after beating Memorial and Kennedy by the combined score of 84-7, but Hendrix said the lack of competition shouldn’t hurt his team going into Friday.

“We’ve played a great schedule and our kids have been laser focused,” he said. “I’m not worried.”
