After seven weeks of non-district games and a bye week, the Geneva School of Boerne finally opened district play last week and the Eagles looked sharp against Corpus Christi John Paul II.

Geneva beat the Guardians 56-7 and face another John Paul II school on Friday, this one from Schertz.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Boerne.

The Eagles took control early last week against CC JP II, scoring 42 points in the first quarter alone. They added 14 in the second for 56 points and didn’t score in the second half, while the Guardians got on the board late in the game with a 6-yard TD run.

Before the bye week, the Eagles scored 42 against Brentwood Christian and then dropped 56 on the Guardians for 98 points in its last two games.

“We played good (on Friday) but they played good before the bye too,” head coach Julius Scott said. “We have Schertz John Paul II and they’re supposed to be improved. Hopefully we can put together a game plan and get after them.”

The Eagles are 4-4 overall and 1-0 in district, while Schertz JP II is 3-5 overall and 0-1 in district after dropping its league opener last week to Holy Cross, 38-10.

Holy Cross was winning 17-10 when the game went into the fourth quarter and pulled away by scoring the final 21 points of the game.

“John Paul II is much improved from my experience with them during my first two years at Geneva,” Scott said. “They are very well coached and have good athletes.”

Geneva only has three district games this year so it’s important for them and any team in the league to be playing good football down the stretch run and that seems to be the case with the Eagles and Scott said they want to continue along that path.

“We will continue to focus on execution and minimizing penalties,” he said.
