The Comfort High football team inched its way closer to a postseason berth after last Friday’s win at Dilley.
Comfort defeated the Wolves, 34-20, and needs one more win in its final two regular-season games to secure a playoff spot.
Comfort will look for that win Friday at home when the Bobcats host Poth. It’ll be a tough one for the CHS team that enters on a two-game winning streak.
Poth is 7-1 and is 4-0 in district. The Pirates’ only loss this year came by one point to Shiner, 22-21, and those 22 points they gave up account for roughly half the points they’ve surrendered all year.
Other than the 22 to Shiner, they’ve only yielded 14 to Blanco and 6 to Dilley – and that’s it.
Comfort coach Brandon Easterly said he knows they’ll have their hands full on Friday.
“They are a very talented team that plays hard and executes well,” he said. “They are solid in all three phases of the game.”
Comfort is 2-2 in district (2-6 overall) and has defeated Karnes City (38-14) and Dilley (34-20) in its last two.
The 38 points against Karnes City is their highest point total this year and the 34 they scored vs. Dilley ties their second-high output, so the Cats appear to be playing some of their best football of the year down the stretch.
“We’ve been sticking together and trying to get better every day,” Easterly said. “Looking back, we are a few plays away from being undefeated in district, so it’s been nice to get the wins the last two weeks.”
The Comfort defense played a big role in last week’s victory against the Wolves. The Cats put Dilley in a pickle with three interception returns for touchdowns.
Besides an 86-yard touchdown run to open the contest, Jaydin Steward had quite a game and returned interceptions 90 and 58 yards for touchdowns. The last one came with just six ticks on the clock to ice the game.
The other Pick-6 came from Israel Lopez who went 65 yards for a score as the Comfort defense accounted for three of the team’s five TDs.
At 2-2 in district, Comfort is ahead of 1-3 Karnes City. If Comfort splits its final two and if Karnes City wins its final two, they would both be 3-3, but since Comfort beat Karnes City, the Bobcats will advance to the playoffs since they own the tiebreaker by beating the Badgers.
