The Comfort High football team picked up a big win Friday on the road and helping its playoff chances after the Bobcats defeated Dilley, 34-20.
CHS has now won two in a row and improves to 2-2 in district and 2-6 overall. The Cats host Poth on Friday and close out the regular season the following week at South San West Campus.
It was a defensive struggle early, but Jaydin Steward put the Bobcats on the board first when he rumbled for 86 yards and a touchdown late in the first quarter for the 7-0 lead with 3:18 left in the stanza.
Late in the second period, Esai Lozano hauled in a 51-yard pass from Seth Cano and the Wolves went for two and converted for the 8-7 advantage, which is where it stayed until halftime.
The teams picked up the scoring pace in the second half. Steward had another long score after he intercepted a pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown, and the 13-8 Comfort edge after a missed extra point.
Sam Tucker added to the Comfort lead later in the third when he dove in from the 1-yard line to put the Cats ahead 20-8 with 3:06 left in the quarter, but Dilley was able to answer quickly.
Before the period ended, Cano recorded an 11-yard TD run and the Wolves had cut into the lead at 20-14 with 1:29 remaining in the third.
Later in the fourth quarter, Cano scored again on another short run of 8 yards, and Dilley had tied it at 20-20 with 5:48 left in the game.
The Comfort defense came up big down the stretch, and it started with Lito Perez intercepting a pass and returning it 65 yards for a touchdown to make it 27-20 with only 1:10 remaining in the game.
Steward, who was already having a good game with two long touchdowns, added one more when he put the Wolves on ice and returned an interception 58 yards for his third touchdown of the night with just 6 ticks on the clock. The extra point was good, and Comfort picked up the 34-20 win.
Steward had one carry that was good for an 86-yard TD and had two Pick 6s of 90 and 58 yards while Lopez also returned an interception at 65 yards for a score. The Comfort defense accounted for three of the team’s touchdowns. The Cats also had another interception in the game for four on the night.
Micah Nye had a good game throwing the ball for Comfort and was 11 for 21 for 96 yards.
