The Boerne High football team is getting into some exclusive company as they look to improve to 8-0 this week.

Boerne returns to Edgewood Stadium after beating Memorial last week and will face Kennedy, the other school in the Edgewood district, Friday at 7 p.m.

With last week’s win, the Greyhounds have matched the best start for a BHS squad since the 2017 team that also went 7-0.

That ’17 team lost its eighth game and in fact lost two in a row to stand at 7-2 before winning its final game of the regular season to go 8-2. They also dropped a tough one in the opening round of the playoffs to Liberty Hill in overtime and ended the year at 8-3.

This year’s Boerne team has tied that 2017 squad with a 7-0 start and has a chance to match the 1963 Boerne football team that is the only Greyhound squad that went undefeated in the regular season. They closed out the ’63 regular season at 9-0-1 after a tie was the only blemish on their record.

If Boerne wins it final three regular-season games starting with Friday’s game against JFK, they’ll be the only BHS team to complete a regular season with a perfect record.

While all that is fine and dandy, current Boerne head coach Che Hendrix said it’s not something they talk a lot about.

“We really haven’t talked about it,” the coach said. “(AD) Stan (Leech) has talked about Boerne football history at team dinners but it’s not something we talk about. We all enjoy it but haven’t talked about it.”

Last week’s game with Memorial went by fast. The Minutemen ran the ball on 39 of 40 plays and the game went to a running clock in the second half and limited possessions for both teams.

Still, Boerne scored 35 points in the win after Jaxon Baize threw TD passes to Houston Hendrix and Brooks Perez, while Adam Hicks, Bode Brown and Ivan Perez all ran in scores.

Because of the running clock in the second half, the Hounds only had three possessions over the last two quarters.

Hendrix said the Rockets will present more of a challenge than Memorial did.

“Their quarterback is good, and they have three or four really good athletes,” Hendrix said. “They definitely have good athletes in a few skill spots.”

After Friday, the Hounds have Somerset and Fredericksburg left on the schedule, games that will be more challenging.

Hendrix said the goal is to just keep improving in every phase of the game and also get better individually.

“There’s nothing real specific we’re focusing on, we’ve done a good job of addressing issues as they’ve come up and they’ve gotten better in all three phases,” he said. “We want to improve overall each week and not be stagnate.”
