Boerne Champion kicks off District 12-5A DI play this Friday and it’ll be a tough one right out of the gate when the Charger football team faces undefeated New Braunfels Canyon.

The Cougars are 3-0 and will host the game against the 2-1 Chargers at 7 p.m.

Champion coach Keith Kaiser said NB Canyon has a really good quarterback in Deuce Adams who has thrown for almost 1,000 yards in three games.

Adams, also a standout baseball player, has completed 69 of 106 passes for 907 yards with 11 TDs and three interceptions.

“They throw the ball and their quarterback is athletic, he extends plays and is a tall, athletic kid,” Kaiser said. “They throw it around pretty good and they have some tough kids.”

Adams is also the team’s third-leading rusher but when he’s throwing, he looks for Xavion Noland and Eli Adams, who both have more than 20 catches this year and five touchdowns each.

Kaiser said he knows the Cougars can be explosive but wants to make them earn their points.

“We’ve got to make them go 10 plays on a drive and make them work for it all,” he said. “They’re big and athletic but I think we’re two similar teams.”

The Cougars have wins over CC Veterans Memorial, Victoria East and just beat New Braunfels in the Wurst Bowl last week, 35-32.

Champion is 2-1 and has defeated Laredo United South and Canyon Lake with its only loss coming to Eagles Pass by a touchdown.

One thing that Kaiser said his team needs to do is finish stronger.

“We have to learn to close games,” he said. “Our third and fourth quarters have to be better. All three games we’ve let teams stay in it.”

Champion had a 27-14 lead over Eagles Pass and lost 35-27, and last week the Chargers were leading over Canyon Lake 44-13 but allowed three four-quarter touchdowns.

Granted, Canyon Lake left its starters in for the entire game, while Champion was moving players in and out and Kaiser said it was something they needed to do.

“Injuries happen and those guys have to do their jobs and show us if something happens, we can count on them,” he said. “It’s the first time those kids have seen the field, to be fair they hadn’t played this year.

“The final score wasn’t what we wanted but we start district (this) week,” the coach continued. “When we were up three scores, it was time to get the ones out, we were healthy.”

Champion scored on its first play of the game against the Hawks last week and was up 7-0 after Kannon Brooks caught a 77-yard bomb just 21 seconds into the game.

The Champion defense came up with a safety on Canyon Lake’s first possession and it was 9-0 a minute into the game.

The Chargers poured it on and was leading 23-0 in the first before building a 44-13 lead as the game went into the fourth quarter before the Hawks rallied with 23 fourth-quarter points to make it close.

“I was kind of surprised they did a double reverse pass against our twos, but I think our defense played well in the first half with that group,” Kaiser said. “Offensively and defensively through the first half, it was extremely good. Our kids played hard and we had explosive plays.”
