The Boerne Champion boys basketball team closed out 2021 with a record-setting performance by one of its players Friday when the Chargers hosted Seguin.

Champion’s Braden Baum dropped in a teamhigh 44 points to pace the Chargers past the Matadors in Boerne, 87-49, and in the process, Baum set a new school scoring record.

The Charger win improves the team to 17-5 overall and 4-1 in district. Champion visits Kerrville Tivy Tuesday as they continue 26-5A action.

Baum’s 44 points is the most scored by a Charger in a game after he broke the record held by Nathan Ghavidel. Ghavidel tallied 41 points on two different occasions.

In Friday’s game, Champion was up 23-17 after one quarter and started to pull away in the second when they hit for 25 and the Matadors only mustered 12 to give the Chargers a 48-29 lead at halftime.

It was more of the same in the third after Champion tallied 29 and held Seguin to 16 to give the team a 77-45 advantage.

The Chargers closed it out by winning all four quarters and taking the fourth, 10-4.

Baum didn’t miss much and made 14 of 19 2-point attempts for 28 points, went 7 for 7 at the line for 7 more points and then knocked down 3 of 4 from the 3-point line for his 44 points.

Jesse Peart finished with 15 points and knocked down a 3, while Braxton Burdick finished with 13 points and drained three 3s for the team that hit 11 longrange shots.

Owen Tate finished with 6 points after he sank a pair of 3s, Jackson Marshall and Alex Gonzalez both made one 3-point shot for 3 points apiece, while Justin Hill tallied 2 points.

Baum and Burdick both grabbed 6 rebounds, Charlie Georgelos snagged 5 boards, Peart dished out 8 assists and Hunter Lampkin had 2 steals.

NOTES: Nathan Ghavidel had the old record of most points scored in a game with 41 that he hit twice, both in 2019, when the Chargers played Kennedy and Southwest. Ghavidel was also third with 37 vs. LEE in 2018 and fourth with 36 in 2019 against Floresville.
