Champion volleyball coach Jessica Tully-Mitchell said she had a few concerns heading into Tuesday’s home match with San Antonio Christian.

The Lady Chargers were playing a team that had given them trouble in a match earlier in the year, plus her squad had just played nine matches in a tournament the previous weekend and she was concerned about fatigue.

Turns out, Tully-Mitchell didn’t have much to worry about after the Chargers took care of the Lady Lions in four sets, 25-12, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21.

The state-ranked Lady Chargers improve to 21-5 overall and played at Ingram on Friday before opening district action next Friday at home against Veterans Memorial. They are off this coming Tuesday.

Tully-Mitchell said her team played well despite being fatigued.

“I think coming off nine really tough opponents (at the Smithson Valley tournament), the girls have to be tired. If I’m tired then they’re even more tired,” she said. “After that last tournament we now go to Tuesday and Friday matches and not do a Tuesday and then go play six or nine games at a tournament. Hopefully they can get their legs under them.”

After Champion took the first game, SACS was up four points late in the second game at 17-13. The Chargers tied them but the Lions called a timeout and slowed Champion down. SACS went on to win the second game and tie it up at 1-1 before the Chargers won the final two sets to close it out.

Emma Wegleitner finished with a double-double and tallied 17 kills and 15 digs, Izzy Maszak added 19 assists and 3 aces, Sadie Hoyt recorded 11 digs, Ella Coleman had 9 kills, Raylynn Pitts totaled 5 kills and 4 digs, Emma Koke led the team in blocks with 6, Gabriela came up with 15 digs and 6 assists and Erin Fallon chipped in with 11 assists and 8 digs.

Champion entered the week ranked No. 11 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association 5A poll. Tully-Mitchell said they also showed up in another poll as well, but added that it doesn’t mean too much at this point.

“I think the girls finally saw some rankings and they got excited, but I told them ‘I don’t care what you’re ranked because every ranking is different,’” she said. “The ranking I want is when it comes down to playoffs. It’s nice but it’s not anything we strive for.”
