Eagles hit the road for tough test at Randolph

The Geneva School of Boerne football team played well in its season opener under new coach Julius Scott.

Geneva defeated St. Michael’s, 27-20, and starts the Julius Scott era and the season at 1-0. The Eagles will try to build on last Friday’s performance when the team visits Randolph for a 7 p.m. contest.

After last Friday’s win, Scott said he was excited for everyone associated with Geneva football.

“I’m extremely happy for the kids and the community,” he said. “Everyone has put so much time and effort. It was awesome seeing a light in their eyes.”

Last Friday’s game was tied 14-14 at halftime but the Eagles outscored the Crusaders in the second half, 13-6.

Landon Grimes had quite a game and rushed for 188 yards on 16 carries to go with three TDs, Sam Armstrong caught two passes for 72 yards and a score and Jacob Rosenstiel tossed one touchdown pass.

George Viña led the defense with seven tackles, while Luke Kaiser intercepted a pass.

Scott said they made a few mistakes but noted that the effort was there.

“As with any film watching, we need to fine tune a lot of things, but as long as the effort continues to be what it was (last) Friday, we’ll be just fine,” he said.

Randolph is coming off a 42-20 win over Schulenburg, so both teams are 1-0 entering Friday’s game and one will suffer its first loss.

Scott said the Ro-Hawks will be a challenge.

“They’re a strong program with talented athletes,” he said. “They are coming off a big win vs. Schulenburg so they’ll be confident.

“Once again, this will challenge us in every phase of the game,” Scott continued. “Hopefully we’ll be up to the challenge.”
