The Boerne Champion volleyball team played in its final regular-season tournament of the year last weekend and it was a big one, the Smithson Valley Texas Showdown.
Champion played nine matches over three days and held its own at the tourney, posting a 6-3 mark. The Lady Chargers finished in fourth place after dropping the third-place match to Harlan on Saturday, a team they beat on the first day of the tourney.
Emma Wegleitner and Ella Coleman were both named to the all-tournament team for the Chargers.
Champion is 20-5 overall and hosted San Antonio Christian on Tuesday before visiting Ingram on Friday.
The Lady Chargers opened with a two-set loss to Conroe Grand Oaks, 28-26, 25-15. Also on the first day, Champion defeated Harlan, 25-22, 25-19 and then finished with a three-set win over Buda Johnson, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20.
Champion returned on Friday and swept MacArthur, 25-21, 25-16 and beat New Braunfels in two, 25-17, 26-24, before taking down Houston Cy-Fair in three sets, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23.
On Saturday, the Lady Chargers won two tough games over host Smithson Valley, 27-25, 27-25, and then lost to Northwest Byron Nelson, 25-14, 25-18, to land in the third-place game.
In the battle for third, Harlan won its rematch with the Lady Chargers in two, 25-13, 25-23.
