Comfort girls host Deer Classic

The Comfort girls basketball team hosted the Comfort Deer Classic to close out 2021 and posted a 2-2 record at its own tournament.

CHS is 10-11 overall. They are scheduled to visit Wimberley on Tuesday to close out non-district and then open league play Friday when they visit Blanco.

Harper won the tourney over Rocksprings, 54-36, while Deer players Meghan Davis and Daniela Hernandez both made the all-tournament team.

Comfort opened the tourney with a 53-34 win over Fox Tech on Wednesday.

Erin Alt led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Meghan Davis added 11 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for two double-doubles for the Deer.

Katie Haffner had 7 points, Daniela Hernandez and Denise Ceja both chipped in with 6, Ashlynn Rodriguez scored 5 and Kallie Doss hit for 2, while Hernandez also recorded 4 steals and 5 assists.

Up next, the Deer beat Johnson City, 52-15.

Meghan Davis finished with 16 points, Ashlynn Rodriguez netted 11, Kallie Doss added 7, Daniela Hernandez scored 4, while Madalynn Rodriguez, Katie Haffner, Erin Alt, Lilly Hernandez, Denise Ceja, Bailey Feldman and Emily Rivera chipped in with 2.

Daniela Hernandez had 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 7 assists, Davis snagged 6 boards and Ashlynn Rodriguez came up with 7 steals.

In the tourney semifinals, Rocksprings overcame a 14-point deficit twice in the fourth quarter and closed the game on a 20-2 run to defeat the Deer, 48-44, and advance to the championship game.

Meghan Davis led Comfort with 12 points, Ashlynn Rodriguez added 8, Kallie Doss had 7, Erin Alt scored 4, Denise Ceja, Daniela Hernandez and Emily Rivera all netted 3 and Katie Haffner had 2.

Davis grabbed 7 rebounds and Daniela Hernandez came up with 4 steals and 5 assists.

Comfort’s loss to Rocksprings dropped the Deer to the third-place game where they faced Hondo and lost to the Owls, 45-28.

Kallie Doss led the team with 8 points, Madalynn Rodriguez had 6, Meghan Davis scored 5, Erin Alt and Ashlynn Rodriguez netted 3, Katie Haffner had 2 and Denise Ceja hit a free throw.

Alt snagged 6 boards and Doss had 3 assists.
