One look at the Boerne High volleyball roster and it’s noticeable how balanced the roster is. When the season started there were seven seniors, three juniors two sophomores and two freshman on this year’s squad.

Besides having a good mix of grades, Greyhounds head coach Tisha Pettibon said they have great chemistry on the court.

“I like how they care about each other and work together and when we’re out of system we’re very consistent because they talk to each other,” she said. “I’m proud of their communication and how they work well together.”

At the same time, the coach said there’s always room for improvement.

“We have to get better at serve-receive, that’s our main focus,” she said.

A look at the team

Included on Boerne’s roster are seniors Jayleen Reyna, Kashtin Waibel, Tana Lux, Hayden Chappell, Corinne Coale, Madison Morris and Tori Adams.

Juniors are Riley Scheidt, Morgan Naylor and Aubrey Menz, sophomores are Ceci Theriot and Ava Rocchio, while freshmen Paige Stegall and Aubree Stegall round out the roster.

“We’re young but we have two sophomores and two freshman that play,” Pettibon said.

The coach added that the seniors have taken the younger players under their wings.

“They’re coaching kids on the court in a positive way,” she noted.

One of the players, Adams, won a silver medal at last year’s state track and field meet in the shot put and can really crush a volleyball.

“She’s a great leader and great person,” Pettibon said. “She’s a great kid for other kids to emulate and be like.”

A look at the district

Boerne is in District 27-4A with Davenport, Bandera, Wimberley, Navarro, Canyon Lake and Fredericksburg.

Wimberley is a perennial state power but Navarro has traditionally fielded a strong program and joins the district this year.

“We added Navarro, who is a district champion and if you add a district champion it’s going to make it more competitive,” Pettibon said. “Davenport has a new coach and they have a lot of athletes and they can be good.”

Fredericksburg is always on Boerne’s radar and vice versa. The Battlin’ Billies were in Boerne to open the season across town at Boerne Champion. The Chargers roughed up Fred and won in three but Pettibon said she knows they’ll be ready for her team when they play against each other.

“They are always good by district and they always play well against us,” she said about the team that added former Greyhound player Maddy Jones to their roster.

Even though they are in a tough district, Pettibon said they have lofty goals.

“We want to try to win district,” she said. “Let’s have some fun and keep playing.”

Boerne went 27-12 last season and finished 8-2 in district before they were eliminated from the playoffs in the opening round by Pleasanton at Littleton Gym.

The Lady Greyhounds open district play on Sept. 9 at home against Davenport.
