BHS football enters season as 4A state power

The Boerne High football program has put together its best back-to-back seasons in program history after the Greyhounds advanced three rounds in each of the last two seasons.

BHS is expected to do well again this year and as the new football season approaches, the Greyhounds are ranked No. 11 in the state in 4A DI.

Boerne coach Che Hendrix said it’s nice to be noticed, but added that rankings and predictions are not something they talk about.

“Rankings are based off last year but you never know what a team is going to look like,” he said. “We don’t put a ton of stock in it, we’re happy with the attention but you just never know.”

One of the reasons the Greyhounds are a top 12 team is because of their depth. Hendrix said they can platoon in a lot of guys and everybody contributes.

“We’re pretty deep and we’ll rotate kids in throughout the year,” he said. “I’m really happy with our defensive line rotation, we have seven or eight guys that we can put in to keep them fresh. Those defensive linemen put forth a lot of effort because they’re banging and chasing, so we’re happy we have a lot of kids we can play.”

A look at the team

Not only is this year’s Boerne team deep but they are big. They have a couple of players that are a buffet away from 300 pounds, topping out at about 290.

“This is the biggest team we’ve ever had in my time at Boerne,” Hendrix said. “I’ve never averaged them out (weight), but what we look for is not just size, but are they athletic and coachable and this group is really athletic and handling all the stuff we’re throwing at them.”

There are a few noticeable contributors from last year’s team that aren’t playing this season because they’ve chosen to focus on other sports and Hendrix said he wishes them well.

“We can only coach who’s here and we have enough guys in our locker room so we’re excited about the season,” the coach said.

Texas Football magazine lists Houston Hendrix, Jacob McLaughlin, Riley Mackrell, Sam Waters, Caleb Hamby, McCoy Bruce, Chance Gentry, Hutson Hendrix, Logan Schram, Luke Mellina, Jeff Brown, Cole Gentry, Koen Wolff, Will French and Charlie Stahl as players to watch.

Another player to keep an eye on is starting quarterback Jaxon Baize. The sophomore replaces three-year starter and four-year varsity letterman Rashawn Galloway who is playing baseball at Texas State.

During the team’s scrimmage with Kerrville Tivy, Baize connected with his brother and receiver Braden Baize a lot.

Hendrix said his QB is progressing well but knows he’ll be tested by opposing defenses.

“He’s done a nice job of picking up the offense, he had a good spring and summer and he’s throwing the ball well,” the coach said. “It’s hard to be a starting quarterback as a sophomore on varsity but he can handle it. People are going to throw a lot of stuff at him so he’s got to keep making good decisions.”

A look at the district

The Greyhounds are picked to win this year’s district (14-4A DI) and Hendrix said he’s excited about the teams in the league that include Fredericksburg, Somerset, Kennedy, Memorial and Uvalde, along with BHS.

“It’s a lot different, but new blood is always fun and always interesting,” he said. “I don’t know much about the San Antonio schools but we’ll learn more as the season goes.”

Boerne and Fredericksburg have been playing in non-district games the last few years but now they’re in the same league and face each other in the final game of the regular season.

“It’s a rivalry game and we might be playing for a district title,” Hendrix said.
