Joan Adam “Jo” Montgomery
February 18, 1937 – August 9, 2022
Joan Adam “Jo” Montgomery, 85, peacefully passed away on August 9, 2022.
She was born to Hugo Gunther Adam and Etelka Hulda Hofheinz on February 18, 1937, in Boerne, Texas. Jo grew up in Boerne on Hillview Lane along with her brother, Harvey, and three sisters, Lenore, Carolyn and Royce. Her family attended St. Helena Episcopal Church and often spent time at her grandparents’ ranch on the Guadalupe River near Bergheim. She graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio.
Jo married Don Asher in 1954 and had four children, Leslie, Randy, Darryl and Kelly. On July 29, 1973, she married the love of her life, Jerry Daniel “Dan” Montgomery. Their only child, Adam Whitney, was born on May 3, 1976.
Jo was known for her love of family, food, travel, celebrations, the Texas Aggies and the Houston Astros. She spent countless hours at the beach with the sand under her feet, surrounded by the people she loved, and her adventurous spirit took her and Dan on excursions to Russia, Europe and Mexico. They moved to Fredericksburg in 1991, where Jo worked as a bookkeeper at the Admiral Nimitz Foundation for 14 years.
Known as “Itsy” to her 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, she cherished having them visit during the summertime, cooking huge meals, trying new recipes and spending hours swimming in the pool. Her grandkids always took pride in helping Itsy squeeze limes in the kitchen for her signature margaritas.
Joan is survived by her husband, Dan; her sister, Royce Maltsberger; and her children and their spouses, Darryl Asher, Randy and Terri Asher, Leslie and Allie Blair, Kelly and David Fisk and Adam Montgomery and Elizabeth Daly. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Darryn Asher, Prewett Asher, Ross Blair, William Blair, Hailey Bussey, Kylie DeLaO, Jamie Hill, Asher McClennahan, Matthew McClennahan, Abigail Montgomery and Carrie Morton; as well as 11 great grandchildren.
Jo was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family.
A celebration of life service will be held in her honor on September 24, 2022. If you would like to attend, please email Leslie Blair at lblair@asher-blair. com for more information. Expressions of sympathy may be sent at www. schaetter.com.
