Library to celebrate 70 years with 1950s event

Can you believe it? There has been a library in Boerne for 70 years!
Library staff were treated to a delicious Christmas breakfast in December, courtesy of the city of Boerne, and staff members Manuela Guerra, left, and Erica Metz enjoyed the festivities.

Can you believe it? There has been a library in Boerne for 70 years!

We will be celebrating that auspicious event, which took place in 1952, by providing 1950s programming, activities, resources and exhibits for the next 12 months. Our very first event takes place on Monday, January 24, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., when Wolfman Frank will take the stage for a 50s Music Trivia Night!

All are welcome to come, but we hope people who love ‘50s music will be sure to attend! See you later, all you cool cats!

Successful festival

We are so excited to report that our Festival of Trees event was a wonderful success this year! Our beautiful trees, wreaths and Christmas decorations brought in more than $4,500!

We are so grateful to all the sponsors who gave their time and money to make it happen. A big shoutout goes to Maverick Properties, Kendall County Roofing, Lovorn & Ogle, A Signature Production, Schneider Engineering LLC, The Christmas Shoppe, Friends of the Boerne Public Library, St. Helena’s Preschool Families, Boerne Area Democrats, Cibolo Quilters Guild, Haute Air, Esther Pais and Family, Falling Rock Farm, Carol Marquardt and the Boerne Area Christian Homeschoolers.

Of course, we are so grateful to all the wonderful people who bid on the objects as well. We hope it made your Christmas merrier!

If you’d like to participate in next year’s festival, please reach out to us and we will be sure to remind you later in 2022.

Live! at the Library

On Thursday, January 20, at 7 p.m., Brittany Shane will take to the stage. Brittany is a singer-songwriter based out of Austin, and she blends rock and pop with poetry.

The performance will take place in the amphitheater located behind the library, but if the weather is just too cold or wet, we’ll bring it inside.

Please don’t forget to bring blankets or chairs for seating, and you’re always welcome to bring your own picnic to the event. These monthly performances are all a part our Live! at the Library concert series.

Welcome back, Leah!

Leah Mayo, who previously worked with us, has returned as a part-time library associate. She must have a perfect memory because she remembers how to do absolutely every task we give her! She is also now part of our wonderful tech team.

Tech help in the lobby

Speaking of our tech team, if you or someone you know received new technology for Christmas, we can help you get started and show you some amazing tips on how to better enjoy your new toy.

Oemuer is here at 10 a.m. on Mondays, Leah can assist you at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Teacup Techie is in the lobby on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m., Manuela is available at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Carlos will be here at 2 p.m. on Thursdays. This is basically a walk in-only service, and it’s completely free!

Please take advantage of these talented techies.

Adult discussion groups

Do you love the written word? Do you love gabbing about it? We have just the thing for you!

Each month, on the first Thursday at noon, you can join fellow lovers of whodunits with our Mysteries for Lunch group. On the second Monday at noon, get together with others enjoy talking about literary fiction in our Food for Thought group. On the fourth Monday at noon, non-fiction is the topic of the day in Reality Readers. On the fourth Thursday of each month at 10 a.m., Mary’s Potpourri discusses a wide range of literature from the classics to non-fiction. And finally, our Boerne Beat poetry group meets on the first Monday of the month at 9:15 a.m.

The next poetry meeting will take place in February.

Brochures with all the topics and titles can be found on our website or here in the library. Any books that are required to read for the discussions can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan, and you are not liable for any postage. As there are a limited number of books we order, we do ask that you don’t take a book if you’re not planning on attending a particular meeting.

Did you know?

The library in Boerne has been in four different locations. When it first opened in 1952, it was right where the public restrooms are at Main Plaza. It was a tiny space that started out with only 400 volumes – all donated.

The second library opened in 1967 in the building located next to the former city hall on Blanco Road. As you may recall, the third location was in what is now the Dienger Trading Company on the corner of Blanco and Main streets, and it opened in 1991.

The location we’re in now opened in June 2011. It was known as the Boerne Public Library in the first three locations, but we honored former mayor and library lover Patrick Heath by naming the new library after him.

Library closure The library will be closed

The library will be closed Monday, January 17, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will re-open on Tuesday, January 18.
