Phillips, Hodo taken in MLB draft

Boerne High School graduates Cole Phillips and Douglas Hodo were both selected in this year’s Major League Baseball draft.

Boerne High School graduates Cole Phillips and Douglas Hodo were both selected in this year’s Major League Baseball draft.

Phillips just graduated from BHS and Hodo graduated three years ago and has been playing at the University of Texas.

Phillips

Phillips was selected on the first day of the Major League Baseball draft Sunday evening.

Phillips went in the second round with the 57th pick to the Atlanta Braves. There was a draft part Sunday night at the Dog & Pony Grill with family and friends.

Phillips had a chance to be a firstround pick but an arm injury sidelined the 100-mile-per-hour fireballer for the second half of his senior season.

If contract terms can’t be reached with the Braves, Phillips has already signed to play with the University of Arkansas and would be draft eligible again after his sophomore year in 2024.

Hodo

Douglas Hodo has been playing with the University of Texas for the last three years after graduating from Boerne High in 2019.

Hodo was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round with the 167th pick on Day 2 of the draft held Monday.

Hodo still has two years of eligibility left with the Longhorns and can return to the team if a deal is not reached with the Orioles.

Hodo helped the Longhorns reach the College World Series two years in a row as a starting outfielder.

For more on both and to see if anybody else from the area was drafted, see Friday’s Boerne Star.
