An attempted traffic stop at 8 a.m. Monday in Kendall County resulted in a driver transporting 10 migrants fleeing and flipping the vehicle shortly after crossing the Bexar County line.
A deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on eastbound Interstate 10 in the Kendall County, but the driver fled while still behind the wheel, leaving deputies attempting to catch up with the vehicle until it flipped after exiting the interstate at Balcones Creek Road.
Information from the Department of Public Safety identified 25-year-old Peter Diaz, of Jacksonville, Florida, as the driver, and the other 10 passengers as undocumented men between the ages of 18 and 45.
All 10 passengers and the driver were injured in some form or fashion, according to local deputies, and two were airlifted to University Hospital with serious injuries. Their condition at press time was unknown. All other passengers were treated at local hospitals and released into custody by the Department of Homeland Security.
The sheriff’s office is filing charges involving the pursuit and crash, while DHS is investigating the human smuggling charges.
