The nearly 1.5 inches of rain Boerne received last week was just what the doctor ordered as the precipitation helped recharge area aquifers after a dreadfully dry first four weeks of June.
The slightly cooler temperatures toward the end of last month also brought a little relief to one of the hottest Junes on record that included nine days of 100-degree heat and nine all-time record high temperatures.
Before last week’s welcome precipitation, Boerne only had received 0.01 of an inch of rain for the entire month of June, according to data from the National Weather Service office in New Braunfels, the station that keeps track of Boerne weather.
The normal amount for June is 3.65 inches, meaning the city has fallen further behind its normal total as 2022 reaches the halfway point.
For the year, Boerne Stage Field, the official measuring place for the city, has received 6.23 inches of precipitation, or only 36 percent of the norm. The normal amount through June is 17.46.
In May, 2.09 inches fell in Boerne, the first time since last November that more than an inch accumulated in any one month.
In June, the Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District moved into Stage 3 drought conditions as Kendall County remained in exceptional drought, the worst level recorded by the U.S. Drought Monitor.
July’s normal precipitation is 3.59 inches.
As far as temperatures, the nine 100-degree days is by far the most of any June this century and the nine all-time records set this month also are the most by far for any month since records have kept dating back to 1898.
The next closest June as far as record highs set was 1925 when three were reached.
The high for the month was 103 degrees, set twice on the 12th and 13th. Other record-high readings were reached on June 2 (97 degrees), June 6 (99), June 7 (102), June 8 (101), June 17 (100), June 24 (100) and June 25 (100).
The all-time record high temperature for Boerne in June is 105 degrees set in 1910 and matched in 1980.
The record high temperature in the city is 112 degrees set on August 23, 1925.
For the month, Boerne’s average high temperature was 97.5 degrees, or almost 8 degrees higher than the 89.8 norm. The average low was only 1.4 degrees higher than normal at 70.4 degrees. The average temperature for the month was 83.9 degrees, or 4.5 degrees warmer than normal.
The low temperature for the month was 65 degrees on June 29.
Besides the nine 100-degree days, five others topped out at 99 degrees. All told, 25 days featured highs of at least 95 degrees. The minimum high temperature was 90 on June 3 and 29.
The short-term forecast calls for more of the same. The three-month outlook through September forecasts temperatures to be above normal and precipitation predicted to be slightly below normal.
