Boerne High remained undefeated in district play after the Lady Hounds defeated Canyon Lake Friday, and in the process, helped BHS coach Amy Ruede reach a milestone.

Boerne clipped the Lady Hawks, 75-14, while Ruede earned her 300th-career win.

After the game, Ruede’s accomplishment was acknowledged before the crowd and she was presented with an engraved glass plaque before taking photos.

Ruede said the one thing that stands out to her about reaching 300 wins is the relationships she’s formed over the years with the players.

“I’ve coached a lot of special kids that mean a lot to me. I say to the kids every year that they make as much of an impact on me as I make on them,” she said. “When I think of all the different teams I’ve had, some have won a lot of games and some haven’t, but those kids are just as important as the ones where we won a lot of games.”

As far as Friday’s game, Canyon Lake scored first and was up 2-0 and then pulled ahead 4-2 but after Jamie Ruede tied it at 4-4 it was all Boerne.

Ruede’s bucket was part of a 22-0 run that put BHS ahead 22-4. The Lady Hawks went on a drought of 6:25 before they scored the final bucket of the opening period and the Lady Hounds carried a 24-6 lead into the second quarter.

Boerne’s offense slowed down a little in the second and they only scored 13, but the Hawks didn’t make up any ground because they only tallied 2 points to give BHS a 37-8 halftime lead.

The second half turned into the Averi Aaron and Hannah Rocchio show. Boerne scored 28 in the third and 10 in the fourth for 38 second-half points and Aaron and Rocchio tallied 31 of the points.

Aaron scored 18 in the third and had a run of 10 straight and scored 14 of their 16 points during one stretch.

“We switched our offense at halftime and the kids came out and executed,” Coach Ruede said. “It opened up the highlow and it was kind of like a layup drill for (Aaron) once we got the ball where we needed it to be.”

After a pair of Aaron free throws put Boerne ahead 60-12, Rocchio took over and dropped in 13 straight points for the Lady Hounds.

“That was good for her,” Coach Ruede said of Rocchio.

Canyon Lake scored 6 in the third and didn’t manage a point in the fourth quarter to give Boerne the 61-point win.

Boerne is 23-3 overall and 3-0 in district. Things will get a lot tougher Tuesday when they resume District 28-4A action. They’ll play at Fredericksburg in a battle of state-ranked teams.

Aaron finished with 31 points in three quarters of work after she had 13 at halftime and 18 in the third quarter, Rocchio tallied 13, all in the second half, Jamie Ruede scored 9 points, Abby Smith chipped in with 7, Jordyn Lemm and Leila Johnson both scored 4, Liz Fox hit a 3, while Savannah Salinas and Sushanna Cobb both hit for 2.

Aaron grabbed 16 rebounds, 9 on the offensive end, Ruede dished out 7 assists, Lemm had 6 steals and Salinas came up with 4 steals.

NOTES: Coach Ruede is 300-137 in her career for a winning percentage of 68 percent. All 300 wins have come at Boerne since this was her first head coaching job. Ruede said when she started coaching she never had a number she hoped to reach and still doesn’t. “I don’t think I ever thought about winning a certain number of games,” she said. “I want to do it as long as I feel like I’m making an impact and helping kids. When I don’t feel like I’m doing that then it’s time for me to stop.” … Ruede said her most memorable win was beating Fredericksburg last year in the regional finals to advance to the state semifinals. “I think the regional finals game with Fredericksburg was huge. Everybody was talking like Fredericksburg was already at state, they didn’t give us a shot,” she said. “Then we show up and responded on the biggest stage, that was big, especially in the year of COVID.”
