Marsha Ann Schubert
Marsha Ann Schubert passed away on the early morning of May 12, 2022. Her husband of 54 years was by her side. She had been battling cancer for four years and was 73.
Marsha was born in Eagle Pass, Texas, the daughter of Ernest and Jewel Hiller. She had two younger brothers, Lawrence and David. An eager student, she graduated from Eagle Pass High School as valedictorian. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. While at the university, Marsha ran across fellow student Charles W. Schubert Jr., who would soon enter the Air Force. They married in 1968.
As a military wife, Marsha lived a nomadic life, moving in quick order to Wichita Falls, Texas, followed by Lompoc, California, and Tucson, Arizona. At Tucson, she had her first son, Damion. She also acquired her first job, teaching in remote, rural and impoverished settings. This experience led her to dedicate her life toward the education of special-needs children. To start this journey, she acquired two master-level degrees from the University of Arizona.
The next move was to Dayton, Ohio, where Marsha served as a special education instructor at Wright State University. She also had her second son, Timothy.
Following a brief stay in Alabama, the next transfer was to Alexandria, Virginia. Here, Marsha acquired a PhD at George Mason University, a process that resulted in the writing or co-writing of 19 professional papers.
When her husband retired in 1992, he and Marsha returned to their native Texas. Marsha entered the arms of the Boerne school system. By now, she had taught special education students in every grade from kindergarten through college level and had held a host of education leadership positions.
She taught at Boerne for 15 years, culminating a 47-year career in education. She retired in 2018 to enjoy the relaxed mood of her home and woods just outside Boerne. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, reading mysteries, playing puzzle games, listening to rain, observing wildlife and cheering loudly at high school football games.
Marsha was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and her faith never failed to guide her. She was beloved by her former students, fellow educators, church friends, neighbors and family.
Marsha is survived by her loving husband, Charles; her two sons, Damion and Timothy; two grandsons, Zachary and Alexander; and her brother, Lawrence Hiller.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Boerne, starting at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hill Country Family Services at 118 Advogt St., Boerne, TX 78006, one of the charities close to Marsha’s heart.
