Henry Everett Paine (Pop), 99, of Boerne, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2022. Henry was born on February 23, 1923, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was one of five children born to Henry and Grace Paine.

Henry Paine was a proud and distinguished member of the United States Army from 1940 to 1960, retiring as a major. Private Paine first served in the Field Artillery when horses still drew the guns. Only after he had cleaned his horse’s stall, brushed the horse’s teeth and coat, watered and fed his charge was he allowed breakfast.

Paine attended OCS and later saw combat in the invasion of Saipan and Okinawa in World War II and during the Korean conflict. One of Captain Paine’s favorite postings was the Nike Ajax Missile Site (SF88) at Fort Berry defending the San Francisco Bay area. His last posting was in Frankfurt, Germany.

Upon retiring from the Army, Henry earned his master of education degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. He was passionate about education and devoted himself to his students as a high school guidance counselor at Parkland High School in El Paso, Texas. This is where he met his wife, Lola, who was a business education teacher. They often joked that they found high school love later in life. After retiring from education, he obtained his real-estate license to keep himself busy.

Henry and Lola moved to Kerrville, Texas, in 1993. They began the next chapter of their lives fully retired. They were active members of the First Christian Church. Henry served as an elder and a deacon for many years.

They moved to Boerne in 2001 where Henry quickly became a life member of the Boerne VFW Post 688. He could regularly be found handing out poppies for Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. He was also a member of the VFW Honor Guard and often participated in the 21-gun salute at community events and funeral services. He volunteered regularly as a mentor and a tutor at Curington Elementary School.

Henry was an avid traveler. He has been to many countries in his lifetime and loved sharing stories and pictures of his adventures. He continued to travel well into his 90s. He also loved fishing, reading and taking scenic country drives. He was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He lived a full life of service to his country and community. His love and compassion touched countless lives in his 99 years. He will be missed dearly by many who knew him.

Henry is survived by son Thomas Paine (wife Jane); grandsons Nicholas Paine (wife McKenzie) and Thomas Brickell Paine; granddaughters Kristina Dinscore (husband Nathan), Jenna Lester and Linda Steward; great-grandchildren Henry Thomas Paine, McKenzie Lester, Kaleb Lester and Krista Lester; as well as many extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by wife, Lola Paine; daughter Bethaneye Jentsch (husband Bryan); brothers Joel Paine and Thomas Paine; and sisters Frances Maggert and Linda Jefferies.

A heartfelt thank you to every caregiver and nurse who lovingly looked after Henry in his home. Also, a special thanks to Guiding Light Hospice for their amazing compassionate care for Henry and his family as he reached the end of his life.
