John Francis McAuliffe
July 4, 1941 – May 9, 2022
John (Jack) Francis McAuliffe, of Boerne, Texas, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Monday, May 9, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. While we are profoundly saddened by his loss, we are comforted knowing that he has been embraced in the loving arms of his Savior in Heaven – restored and free of any discomfort.
Jack was a devoted husband, loving father, adored grandfather and friend to many. He was well-known for always reaching out and staying connected – maintaining close friendships with childhood friends, extended family members, numerous former colleagues and neighbors. Jack leaves behind an inspiring legacy of loyalty, integrity and devotion.
A native of Washington, D.C., Jack was born on July 4, 1941, to John W. and Mary M. McAuliffe. Jack, the oldest of three children, grew up in Cheverly, Maryland, close to most of his extended family.
He was an altar boy while attending St. Ambrose grammar school and went on to attend St. John’s College High School, commuting daily into Washington, D.C., with his uncles, aunt and mother. After graduating high school, Jack joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a fingerprint clerk at the age of 18. On a blind date arranged by friends, Jack met Jane Jackson, the love of his life. They were married on November 26, 1960, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Riverdale, Maryland.
After they married, Jack left the FBI to work as an intelligence analyst with the National Security Agency (NSA). During his 10 years at the NSA, their three sons – John, Michael and Tim – were born. While at NSA, Jack was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Maryland. He earned his B.A. in 1966 from UM. NSA later assigned him to a three-year tour of duty in England. Jack and Jane enjoyed living in England and traveled all across Europe.
While Jack excelled at NSA, his dream was to become a special agent with the FBI. In 1971, Jack was hired by the FBI as a special agent. During his long career, he was assigned to FBI offices in Boston, Rochester, Houston and FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. Jack became a supervisory special agent, including a criminal squad supervisor in Houston. He retired from the FBI in April 1993. He always wore his FBI ring with pride.
After his FBI retirement, Jack continued in law enforcement as the Director of the Internal Affairs Division for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. In 1999, Jack became the first Inspector General of the Department. Finally, Jack served as an adjunct instructor with the National Emergency Response and Training Center at Texas A&M University. In 2003, Jack officially retired from "the world of work.”
With renewed fervor, Jack enjoyed family, friends, gardening, traveling, running, tubing and swimming. Jack’s patriotism and his Catholicism were extremely important to him. He loved his Irish heritage, his dogs and Notre Dame University. A run with his dogs, or a trip to a Notre Dame game – no matter the weather – was pure joy for him. Any day at the beach was heaven-sent.
Saturday Mass and dinner out with close friends was his preferred night out. These simple activities were matched only by the joy of family. On November 26, 2021, Jack and Jane were blessed to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary in the company of family and friends.
Jack loved his land and his dogs with equal devotion. He spent many, many mornings on long walks around his 60 acres of the Texas Hill Country. When his children and grandchildren joined in, he experienced the perfect day.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Jane; his sisters, Mary Alyce Springer and Tricia Fox (and their families); his sons, John, Michael (wife Robin Rosenberg) and Timothy (wife Ashley); 10 grandchildren, Courtney Crisp (husband Adam), Katelyn Alexander (husband Grant), Sydney McAuliffe, James McAuliffe, Shaye McAuliffe, Madison McAuliffe, Shannon McAuliffe, Adin McAuliffe, Patrick McAuliffe and Liam McAuliffe; and two great-grandchildren, Addison and Sophia Crisp. Jack will also be missed by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vicki and Nick Mirabile, and close family members Alyce Robbins, Mary Ellen Rhatigan and Christopher Murphy, and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. Our Jack is a part of us as long as we remember him and share stories of his life.
