Greyhounds sweep Apaches in 2

Boerne High opened the baseball playoffs last weekend and defeated Gonzales in two games.

Boerne High opened the baseball playoffs last weekend and defeated Gonzales in two games.

The Hounds took Game 1 on the road Friday at Gonzales, 19-6, and claimed Game 2 Saturday in Boerne, 10-0.

BHS improves to 29-3 overall and faces Sweeny in the second round in a one gamer Friday in Hallettsville, 7 p.m.

In Saturday’s game, Andrew Poole tossed a two-hit shutout against the Apaches and fanned 9 batters, while not walking a batter.

Gonzales doubled in the first inning off Poole and then he hit a batter and the Apaches had runners at second and third with two outs, but BHS shortstop Cam Johnson fielded a grounder up the middle and threw the batter out at first to end the threat.

After that, Gonzales didn’t record another hit until the sixth frame and in between hits, Poole retired 10 straight batters at one point.

Poole not only helped the Hounds on the mound but he helped his cause with his stick and came up with a single, double and reached on a fielder’s choice. He also scored a run and then drove in the game-ending run in the bottom of the sixth to kick in the mercy rule.

Poole said he was doing what he could to help the team close out the series. He even ran for himself in the fifth and scored a run.

“Today was different, but I usually don’t mind running for myself,” he said.

Boerne was up 3-0 after four and then busted it open in the fifth after they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 6 runs. The Hounds chased Apaches starting pitcher Joe Canales from the game in that inning.

“Today we came out and made adjustments, our kids did that,” BHS coach Bill Merrell said.

BHS finished with 10 hits and Kalob Sanchez hit 2 singles and drove in 3 runs, Johnson was hit by a pitch and scored; Riley Pechacek singled and doubled and scored the game-ending run; Tyler Garritano singled, walked and scored; Dylan Perez hit 2 singles and scored both times; Hutson Hendrix walked twice and scored once; Connor Shill singled, picked up an RBI and scored and Jaxon Baize scored once.

Game 1

It took a while for the Boerne team bus to get to Gonzales and they didn’t arrive at the field until 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. contest but the Hounds got the job done.

“It took 90 minutes to get from Boerne to New Braunfels,” Merrell said.

The Hounds were steady and scored in six of seven innings. They went up 8-1 at one point, but the Apaches plated 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth to climb back into it at 8-5.

That’s when Boerne created some distance with 6 runs in the sixth and 5 in the seventh. It was 14-6 after six and then went to the seventh where it became 19-6 but since it was in the last inning, the Apaches had the chance to bat and why the mercy rule didn’t kick in.

Boerne finished with 17 hits in the game, including 2 home runs from Rashawn Galloway who also singled, walked twice, scored 2 runs and collected 5 RBI.

Riley Pechacek doubled, singled, drove in 2 runs and scored once; Dylan Perez doubled and scored; Andrew Poole doubled and picked up an RBI and Connor Shill doubled and scored twice.

Cam Johnson tripled, drove in 2 runs and scored a run; Kalob Sanchez had 3 singles, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored; Max Garcia scored 3 runs; Tyler Garritano hit 2 singles and scored 3 times, Hutson Hendrix hit 2 singles, walked twice and scored 3 runs, while Hendrix, Xander Cloudy and Landon Lestourgeon all picked up 1 RBI.

Cloudy went 4.2 innings and picked up the win, gave up 4 runs, walked 3 and fanned 7, while Lestourgeon threw the final 2.1 frames and yielded 2 hits, 1 run and sat down 3 with no walks.
