Marsha Hammond is leaving her position as the Champion girls basketball coach after accepting a job at Comal ISD to become the new Assistant Athletic Director.

Hammond is also a Chargers assistant track coach and will be with the Champion state qualifiers at this weekend’s state meet before beginning her new job with Comal ISD fulltime starting on Monday.

Hammond led the Champion girls program for seven seasons and posted a record of 158-72 and won more than 20 games in all seven seasons.

Hammond’s biggest accomplishment on the court was leading the girls program to its first second-round victory in the playoffs back in 2020 when the Chargers defeated Brackenridge. Before that, a Champion girls basketball team had never advanced past the second round. The Chargers also advanced to the third round in 2021 when they sacked Southside in the second round.

In her new role with Comal ISD, Hammond won’t coach or teach and will work strictly in an administrative role. She said it’s a bittersweet decision to leave Champion and coaching/teaching.

“I have mixed emotions about not coaching anymore, but I’m excited about it, it’s a totally new adventure,” she said.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for Hammond. Before coming to Champion, she was a basketball coach at New Braunfels Canyon for seven seasons, the last two as the head coach. Hammond also served as an assistant coach at Copperas Cove before that and has been a coach for 22 years.

Hammond’s son Pryce will be a senior at Champion in the fall and her daughter Prestley graduated from Champion and played for her mom.

So, what is Hammond’s best memory? “That was big (the win over Brackenridge) and the years I got to coach my daughter and build the program with great kids and great parents,” she said. “It’s about the relationships, I’ve coached really good kids and in 22 years of coaching, the girls at Champion are the best group of girls that I had.”

Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech said he hopes to have Hammond’s replacement hired by May 21.
